PRESS RELEASE Off the plane from San Francisco: Verb Ballets Hosts Choreographer Charles Anderson Former New York City Ballet Dancer and Founder of Company C Contemporary Ballet CLEVELAND, OH - Verb Ballets is proud to welcome national choreographer Charles Anderson in studio the week of June 27-July 1, 2016. Anderson is a former member of New York City Ballet and has become one of the leading forces of the San Francisco Bay Area contemporary dance movement. Anderson began choreographing ballets while still a dancer with the New York City Ballet, and he co-founded and acted as artistic director for Ballet, Inc. in New York, where he choreographed many of his early works. He later founded Company C Contemporary Ballet in 2002, where he currently serves as Artistic Director in San Francisco. Verb Ballets welcomes guest choreographer Anderson into the studio to set the company premiere of his striking ballet, Aposiopesis. This contemporary full ensemble ballet is an ode to abstraction exploring a circular theme visually sweeping the stage to reveal expansive arches and broad curves. Anderson's work reflects a blend of classical and contemporary influences and is included in the repertories of professional dance companies throughout the country. Verb Ballets looks forward to hosting Anderson and adding to the wealth of company repertory. ABOUT THE SHOW In the wake of a catastrophic drought, mega-corporation Urine Good Company has passed laws forbidding private restrooms and requiring payment for the usage of public ones, to conserve water. Those who do not pay for "The Privilege to Pee" are sent to a mysteriously ominous place known only as Urinetown. For twenty years the poor have been oppressed by ridiculous prices, until one day a young Public Amenity Attendant leads an uprising of the poor against the tyranny of their oppressors. Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Urinetown is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be, Urinetown is a show brimming with wickedly modern wit, and a sustained ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter! CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS Officer Lockstock-Vocal Range: Bass/ Baritone Narrator of the show and leader of the Police. A figure of authority. A key role. Bobby is the leader of the poor through the rebellion and is not afraid to stand up for what he believes in. Falls in love with Hope. A key role. Strong acting - singing ability and good comic timing. Prominent in 8 songs Hope Cladwell-Vocal Range: Soprano Cladwell's good hearted daughter. Fresh out of the Most Expensive University of the World and about to work at her father's company. A naïve girl who believes there is good in everyone. Ditzy and has only gotten through life on her father's money - but she doesn't know it. Falls in love with Bobby. Key role. Strong acting - singing ability and good comic timing. Prominent in 6 songs. Caldwell B Cladwell-Vocal Range: Baritone or Bass Baritone CEO of Urine Good Company (UGC). Greedy and vicious villain of the show. Key role. Strong acting - singing ability and good comic timing. Prominent in 5 songs Penelope Pennywise-Vocal Range: Alto Can be younger in real age but will be made up to look older. The proprietor of Public Amenity #9, the poorest urinal in town. A Black sheep, She betters her public standing by leaching onto Cladwell. She is always searching to find a quick buck and is ruthless in her attack. Harbors a secret! A gutsy female character. Strong acting - singing ability and comic timing. Prominent in 5 songs. Senator Fipp-Vocal Range: Bass A corrupt Senator who hides all his crimes through politics. A creepy character who seems to lurk in all the wrong places. Strong acting, minimal singing skills and good comic timing. Prominent in 3 songs Mr McQueen-Vocal Range: Tenor Cladwell's head lackey. He is always following in Cladwell's footsteps. Too weak to step out of the shadow. Strong acting, minimal singing skills and good comic timing. Prominent in 3 songs. Hot Blades Harry-Vocal Range: Tenor A dangerous and unpredictable man! David Fuller: Has been teaching voice in Geauga and eastern Cuyahoga counties since 1995. He holds a Mater of Music degree in Applied Voice from the Boston Conservatory of Music. He is currently the Coordinator of Liturgical Music for the Church of St Anselm and the Director of Music for the Fairmount Center for the Arts. David serves on the " Singing Angels " Arts Advisory Board as well as the Geauga Council for Arts and Culture. David: has a passion for developing singers. Many of his students have gone on to attend prestigious schools like New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, Baldwin Wallace Conservatory, C.C.M. and others. About the Summer Theatre CAMP: Down the Rabbit Hole: “Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.” Join Wandering Aesthetics’ Education Director and Storyteller Kyle Jozsa as he guides students down the rabbit hole. Using theatrical concepts, including imagination, character creation and teamwork, students will explore the world of Alice in Wonderland culminating in the development of their very own story. This week long summer camp will introduce students to the concepts of live performance. Each morning, in his engaging style, Jozsa will teach students the fundamentals, and some more advanced techniques, of theatre. Each afternoon, students will collaborate to craft their tale in an atmosphere of cooperation and playfulness, culminating in a final performance for friends and family. Students should bring a brown bag lunch. About the Instructor: Recently named one of the 2016 Akron Arts Alive! Award Winners for Outstanding Artist in Theater, Kyle Jozsa is the primary Storyteller and Director of Education with Wandering Aesthetics. He began his teaching career in 2010 with Weathervane Playhouse. Since that time, Jozsa has worked full-time as a preschool teacher, developed curriculum for traditional and non-traditional classes alike, and led workshops for students of all age groups throughout Northeast Ohio – working with organizations such as City Sprouts, Cleveland School of the Arts - Lower Campus, Countryside Conservancy, Crown Point, Firestone High School, The Goddard School, TACA, TransOhio and many more. He currently works as a Teaching Artist for HBTI, The Artful Living Program out of Stark County and as a part-time Instructor at Gymboree in Strongsville. Along with other local artists, Jozsa is working to bring a play-based enrichment program to the Akron area, while simultaneously building the Wandering Aesthetics Department of Education from the ground up.
