This inaugural event, which CVLT intends to make an annual part of the theater's already-packed calendar, has been created to recognize the actors, staff, board members and others who keep the almost entirely volunteer-run organization moving. The event will take place on Saturday, August 27 at the CVLT building at 40 River Street in Chagrin Falls. The eponymous Audrey DeVere was an early performer with CVLT, first appearing in the mid-1930s. She played fourteen roles at the Theatre over three decades, taking turns on CVLT's original Township Hall 'Opera House' stage (lost to fire in 1943), its temporary home at the Chagrin Falls High School auditorium on Philomethian Street, as well as the Main Stage at the current CVLT building. Audrey's son, Rollin DeVere II, has served on the organization's board for many years, performed on its stages dozens of times, and is the Theatre's resident historian. His wife (Judith), son (Rollin DeVere III), and daughter (Lydian DeVere) have also trod the boards there. Even her great-granddaughter and son-in-law made an appearance in 2006, making the DeVere name practically synonymous with Chagrin Valley Little Theatre to its regulars. The plans for the inaugural Audrey Awards include a 'red carpet' welcome reception at 6:45 PM, featuring champagne and hors d'oeuvres. The ceremony itself (patterned after the Tony Awards, with a bit of music and comedy) begins at 7:30. Awards will be given to actors, directors, and volunteers, plus special awards for unique contributions to the organization. Following the ceremony, a reception will be held. Wine and beer will be available at a cash bar. Dress code for the event is 'black tie optional, but encouraged.' Nominations for the Audreys will be announced in an informal event at CVLT on Monday, July 11 at 7:00 PM, and will be shared on the theatre's social networks and website. Those who have held a membership or season subscription during the current season will be eligible to vote. Tickets, the proceeds from which will be used to defray the event expenses, are to be sold for $15 (nominees for competitive awards will be given free admission.) Tickets will be made available online at CVLT.org after nominees have been announced. Tickets will also be available at 440-247-8955, or at the Box Office (1 - 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday). Just sit in the audience while the Ohio Shakespeare Festival is performing." (Cleveland Scene Magazine) Ohio Shakespeare Festival, performing for a fifteenth summer at beautiful Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens in Akron, will open its 2016 Season with William Shakespeare's magical comedy The Tempest. Following will come Robin Hood: an Adventure with Music, a swashbuckling adventure to kick off OSF's Family Theatre programming, and the summer will end with the wicked deeds of one of Shakespeare's greatest villains, Macbeth. The Tempest will preview on July 1, open July 2 and run through July 17. Robin Hood: an Adventure with Music will perform one weekend only, July 21 to 24, and Macbeth will preview on August 5, open August 6, and run through August 21. Performances are Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights at 8 pm. The two Shakespeare plays are preceded at 7:30 pm by our popular "Greenshow" of songs, dances, swordfights and parodies. Stan Hywet's grounds open at 6 pm all evenings for picnicking in a wide variety of scenic locations, and concessions are available for purchase, including sandwiches, snacks, wines, and microbrews. The Tempest will feature OSF Founding Artistic Director Terry Burgler at the wizard Prospero, with Chloe Smith as his beautiful daughter Miranda, Tess Burgler as his spirit servant Ariel, and Geoff Knox as the monster Caliban. Longtime Company members David McNees, Mark Stoffer, Joe Pine, Ryan Zarecki, Scott Campbell, and Jason Leupold play a few of the stranded sea-farers on Prospero's magical, spirit-filled island. Robin Hood: an Adventure with Music will perform next, script by Terry Burgler, with original music and lyrics by Scott Campbell. Designed to appeal to all ages, OSF's first Family Theatre offering tells a new adventure of the famous bandit of Sherwood Forest and his Merry Men. Adventure, romance, swordplay and tights abound in this rollicking comedy fit for the entire family. Sir Robin of Locksley, named "Robin Hood" by his detractors, is played by Andrew Cruse, with Tess Burgler as his Maid Marian, and David McNees as the Sheriff of Nottingham. Macbeth will complete OSF's season, featuring Bernard Bygott and Lara Mielcarek, last season's Benedick and Beatrice, as the murderous couple determined to become the King and Queen of ancient Scotland. Geoff Knox is featured as Macduff, Joe Pine as Malcolm, and Ryan Zarecki as Banquo. In order to make live performances of Shakespeare accessible to all budgets, OSF is offering two evenings with ticketing supported by OSF, the Corbin Foundation, and the Akron Community Foundation. The Tempest will have a "Pay what you Will(iam Shakespeare)" performance on Thursday, July 7, and Macbeth will have a performance free for all students (with ID) on Thursday, August 11. Cleveland Public Theatre carves out powerful ‘Lines in the Dust’ Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics “The people came out of their houses and smelled the hot stinging air and covered their noses from it…. The men were silent and they did not move often. And the women came out of the houses to stand beside their men – to feel whether this time the men would break…. The children peeked at the faces of the men and women, and then drew careful lines in the dust with their toes…. Then they asked, Whta'll we do?” This excerpt from John Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath” lays bare the quiet desperation of poor families driven from their homes by drought, dust and the economic hardship of the 1930s. And it shows us the things despondent people will do to survive with dignity. “In the name of the greatest people that have ever trod this earth, I draw the line in the dust and toss the gauntlet before the feet of tyranny, and I say segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.” This excerpt comes from George Wallace’s Inaugural Address, delivered in 1963 following his election as Governor. And it shows us the things defensive people will do to keep others from surviving with dignity. Crossing a dividing line in the dust that separates a better life from those who desire it is a high risk endeavor, regardless of whether it is drawn in the dead corn fields of Depression-era Oklahoma, the cold concrete portico of the Civil Rights-era Alabama State Capitol building or – as demonstrated in Nikkole Salter's 2014 play – in the war zone classrooms of contemporary Newark, New Jersey. This is a once in a lifetime chance for the makers of arts and culture in Northeast Ohio to show off and promote our scene to people in our region and around the world. (…that “world" thing got you nervous?) Some Details About the Gig: What: This is a street acting performance gig where improvisation and audience interaction will make the show. We’re looking for people who have or would like to play one of America’s past Presidents. We need actors to play Abe Lincoln, and we’re especially interested in people who would play one of Ohio’s Presidents: Harrison, Grant, Garfield, Hayes, McKinnley, Harding, or Taft—but the more actors and more presidents we have, the better. So step up Bill (Clinton), and where are you Tricky Dick? (Nixon), you too Hillary, Bernie, and the other wannabes, we need you! There won’t be any scripts, just background information to become familiar with—we want our actors to have fun and contribute to the making of each performance, to show off their creativity and improvisational skills. Each event will be covered by the media and everyone involved will be credited. When: July 8 - July 17, We’re planning approximately 10 performances, one every day for one hour each, with a few during lunch hour but most after 5:00 PM.
