Seeking male and female actors for "This Girlz Lyfe" a play about domestic violence and drug addiction written by Ernesta Jefferson. Review of "The Toxic Avenger" at Cain Park

Cain Park’s ‘The Toxic Avenger’ goes from intoxicating to punch-drunk Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics “The Toxic Avenger,” currently on stage at Cain Park, is the love-child of “Little Shop of Horrors” and “Rocky Horror Picture Show.” No, that’s not really how this off-beat, off-Broadway rock musical came into being. But it’s so much easier to envision this kind of conception then the fact that such a conspicuously silly sci-fi farce was written by the same fellows – Joe DiPietro (“I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change”) and David Bryan (keyboardist for the rock band Bon Jovi) – who won a Tony Award for writing the comparatively straight-laced musical “Memphis.” Based on the 1984 low-budgeted B-movie by Lloyd Kaufman, “The Toxic Avenger” features nerdy Melvin Ferd III (Ellis C. Dawson III), who is in love with the blind town librarian Sarah (Natalie Green) and is on a mission to clean up the nuclear waste in his hometown in New Jersey. The corrupt Mayor of the town (Kate Leigh Michalski), whose shady business deals are responsible for the toxic dump, attempts to foil Melvin’s plans by having her thugs (Codie Higer and Mariah Burks) dump him into a vat of toxic goo. He emerges as a deformed, radioactive mutant with superhuman strength, hell-bent on righting wrongs and breaking into song with little provocation. DiPietro’s script is hilarious and uses every sci-fi genre trope, musical theater convention and New Jersey failing as its plaything. But what is delightfully outrageous and deliciously idiotic out of the gate becomes tedious as audiences grow accustomed and then numb to things sick, shocking and sarcastic. The same goes for David Bryan’s score, which wedges witty wordplay into generic musical theater genres that become indistinguishable over time despite a superb band under Jordan Cooper’s direction. Despite its creative challenges, this production of “The Toxic Avenger” is a success. The reason is the seven exceptionally talented, fully committed, and unflinching performers who operate under Nathan Motta’s immensely playful direction and choreography. Angeline Productions’ is currently accepting video auditions for the original feature-length film, “A Murder Party”, a campy comedy-drama set in late Victorian era England. Blending satire with dark comedy, the story follows Mickey Davenport and his band of friends as they attempt to cover up an accidental death, encountering shenanigans along the way. All actors must speak with an English accent, and characters Connie and Abigail must speak with a “Cockney” accent. Born in the Moon of the Chokecherries Blackening (Canpasapa Wi in the Lakota language: the month of July) and raised in parts of rural Nebraska and on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, Frank Running, better known as Little Elk, has spent a lifetime learning and passing on the traditional arts, language, and spirituality of his Lakota heritage. A full-blooded, enrolled member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe (also known as the Sicangu Oyate or Upper Brulé Sioux Nation), he is a member of the Crow Dog clan that includes the lineage of Red Cloud on one side and Crazy Horse on the other. He has made Kent his home for more than a decade, returning home to South Dakota each year to see family and reconnect with his roots and culture. In this program, Little Elk will present five different drums: the powwow drum, the Sun Dance drum, the hand drum, the shield drum, and the water drum. He will sing selected traditional songs including inipi (sweat lodge), chanunpa (pipe), and Wiwanyang Wachipi (Sun Dance) songs, sharing stories behind the songs, and from his life's experience, along the way. The musical program will be preceded by a showing of the short documentary "Live and Remember: Wo Kiksuye" (dir. Henry Smith, 1987). Filmed on the Rosebud Reservation and featuring interviews with Sioux elders, the film will help to introduce viewers to the landscape and world view of the Lakota people, in particular their concept of Mitakuye Oyasin, or the interconnectedness of all beings in the web of life. Join us for three weeks of classes from 7-9 where you will learn a variety of forms of solo and partnered Charleston with two of your favorite Charleston dancers - Steffanie and Jeff! In this fun class you will learn all of the ins and outs of a dance that originated from the rebellious youth culture of the 1920s. You will learn many moves and transitions to and from side-by-side, hand-to-hand, inline Charleston and more. Charleston is a great dance to add into your Jitterbug, Lindy or whatever swing dance forms you currently know and love. You can expect to be able to easily lead and follow a multitude of Charleston moves by the end of this 3 week session. Join Corrie and Jim for three weeks of classes from 7-9 where you will learn the world famous California Routine - WITH aerials - for dancers WITH Lindy experience and/or fast learners. This is THE classic Lindy Hop routine that every Swing Dancer should know. It has been done since the 30s with Whitey's Lindy Hoppers and lives on today. We will show some easy adaptations on the aerials. CALIFORNIA ROUTINE - Created in the middle of 1941, the California Routine is one of the most pervasive and recognizable Lindy Hop routines. Originally choreographed in the middle of 1941, the California Routine represents one of Frankie Manning’s interpretations of Jumpin’ at the Woodside. Created for the movie Hellzapoppin’, the routine featured four couples, all members of Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers, and begins as the last of their solos end. Although it wasn’t the first routine to hit the big screen, it represented a step towards the increased professionalism of lindy hoppers because of the requirements that Frankie Manning placed on himself as the choreographer and the demanding practice schedule placed on the all of the dancers. This routine helped to establish lindy hoppers as more than filler for more established types of entertainers.
