The Manhattan Project is a low-stakes, nonthreatening place for actors and playwrights to meet and work together. Based on the Theatre Lab model taught at the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama and inspired by The Brooklyn Generator in New York, The Manhattan Project wants to introduce Cleveland actors and playwrights to each other by organizing a bi-monthly production of brand new 10-minute plays. Participating artists will meet early in the month and will be broken into teams, each with one playwright. The playwright will then be given a writing prompt to write a new 10-minute play based on the prompt and including all the team's actors. The rest of the evening the team members will get to know each other and get a feel for each other's skills and voices. The teams will reconvene later in the month to perform these plays for each other. These 10-minute plays are not an end in themselves. Through these small collaborations we hope to build relationships between the two most vulnerable artists in theatre; the actors who put themselves on stage and the playwrights who pour themselves onto the page. Perhaps these 10-minute plays will grow into longer works or maybe these collaborations will become partnerships on larger projects. Wandering Aesthetics is proud to announce the next Electric Pressure Cooker Cabaret – a monthly “Anything Goes” Open Mic–style Cabaret. The Electric Pressure Cooker will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at 8 pm at None Too Fragile Theater inside Pub Bricco, located at 1841 Merriman Road in Akron, Ohio. The Electric Pressure Cooker is open the public. Tickets are $10 for audience members and $5 for performing artists. Started in the basement of a flower shop, it is an artist driven event that sees over 100 audience members, 30 performances and 6 non-stop hours of art. Registration for performers begins at 7:30 pm. An emcee, house drum kit and sound system (with operators) are provided. Willy Kollman – Torchbearers Class of 2014 – is this month’s emcee. ALL varieties of acts are encouraged to perform. Bitter enemies — like Peter and the Wolf, Toto and the Witch, and Jack and the cow he sold for magic beans — face off. Old grudges are rekindled, and tensions run high. River of Song: A Pete Seeger-Inspired Family Community Sing and Benefit will be held on Saturday, February 27, 3-5 p.m., at South Haven United Church of Christ, 415 Northfield Rd., Bedford (snow date March 7). A combined effort of Folknet (www.folknet.org <http://www.folknet.org/>), Cuyahoga River Restoration (www.cuyahogariver.org <http://www.cuyahogariver.org/> ), and South Haven UCC, the event will celebrate the musical artistry and political activism of the legendary folksinger Pete Seeger (1919-2014), focus on environmental water issues of the Greater Cleveland Great Lakes area, and help alleviate hunger in Northeast Ohio. The event will be a wonderful shared music experience for all ages and across several generations. In true community-sing fashion, the audience will be encouraged to participate in singing, rhythmic clapping, hand motions, and more to songs either written by Seeger or highlighted in his many concerts. These include, “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?”, “America, The Beautiful”, “This Land Is Your Land”, and many other folk standards. Some of the Folknet-provided performers/song leaders for the event will include David Budin, Rick Feinberg, Tom Honsa, Joanne Lessig, Michael McDonald, Mary Starbuck, and Diana Tyler. Cuyahoga River Restoration (operating under the non-profit auspices of the Cuyahoga River Community Planning Organization) is working towards, “Restoring, revitalizing and protecting the Cuyahoga River watershed and nearshore Lake Erie.” The organization will be represented at the event through a display about the Cuyahoga River and the group’s clean-up efforts, as well as providing ideas and opportunities on how residents of this area can help. Admission and other monetary donations will benefit CRR’s efforts. Suggested admission is $5/per person ($10 maximum/family) OR $3 and two cans of food/person ($8 maximum and 4 cans of food/family). DON'T DELAY IN RESERVING YOUR SEATS!! :-) For tickets, please visit www.HudsonPlayers.com or call 330-655-8522 As you watch the upcoming Hudson Players’ performance of the Tony-award winning, Broadway musical, 1776, you’ll wonder how the Declaration of Independence ever got done! Filled with sarcasm, name-calling, and physical altercations between politicians like John Adams, Ben Franklin and many others, the only likely difference between the congress of 1776 and the current one is the frequent outburst of songs. The cast, which just recently began its practices at Barlow Community Theatre in Hudson, consists of nearly all men (25) and two women, with nearly all being from the Hudson, Stow, Cuyahoga Falls, Twinsburg, Akron, and Barberton areas. For some, it’s their first show with the Hudson Players, and for others, like the co-music director Ron Jones, it’s the 4th show, and the 3rd time he’s assisted Roger Clary with the music (others include the award-winning Secret Garden and Spamalot). For Ron, 1776 has been on his “bucket list since it came out in the early 70’s…When Roger called, I jumped at the chance to be part of the production. Historically, this gives you a real inside to the creation of the Declaration of Independence…It wasn’t all just fun and games.” He comments further that the “music develops the historical significance of the people and social norms of the time.” Conni Caldren-Fleming, as choreographer (and first time with Hudson Players), has always wanted to do 1776, as it is one of her “favorite pieces of the theatre and I really want the audience to not only be entertained, but to understand that these characters were real people, risking literally everything including their lives, doing an impossible thing at an impossible time in history—and they succeeded!” Director Claudia Lillibridge, who previously directed The Secret Garden with Hudson Players, says that the greatest challenge of 1776 is “making sure there is space for everyone” as the cast is so large for many of the scenes. She goes on that “it is truly an honor to be involved in a show where the characters were real humans, with real lives, real problems and real joy.” The fun begins with a tied vote for independence and the rest is, well, history! John Adams, who takes most of the heat (literally and figuratively!) in the show, is played by Mark Durbin of Twinsburg. He is the victim being attacked in the first song, “For God’s Sake John, Sit Down!” which sets the humorous and energetic tone for the production. Joining Mark Durbin (Adams) are Gary Maher as John Hancock, Jessica DeFrange as Abigail Adams, long-time Hudson resident Jim Wolf as Richard Henry Lee, Michael J. Rogan as John Dickerson, Bob Kenderes as Andrew McNair, Adam Klusty of Barberton as Leather Apron, William Johns as the Courior, Thaddeus Bosman as Dr. Lyman Hall, Thomas Emerick as Stephen Hopkinson, and Mark Moore as Colonel Thomas McKean. John D. Haller plays Ceasar Rodney, Dan Williams is George Reed, Doug Lillibridge returns to Hudson Players as Lewis Morris, John Marfy portrays Robert Livingston, and John Alan Webb is cast as Joseph Hewes. Other cast members include Nathan Hill as Josiah Bartlett, Nathan Borukhovsky as Roger Sherman, Michael Guffey playing the red-haired and lonely Thomas Jefferson, Jessica West as Martha Jefferson, Sean Donavan as Samuel Chase, Issac Whitemarsh as the painter, Kirk Worcester (most recently of “Play On” with Hudson Players), Fig Jankowski as the cantankerous Ben Franklin (and formerly of the Addams Family production), Roger Parker as the Reverend John Witherspoon, and Thomas Horsfall as James Wilson. 1776 will be held at Barlow Community Theatre (41 S.
