At 10:30 am today, I closed the doors to the storage shed after placing the costumes, signs, and two small tables into it. An American Family by the Canal Fulton Players is now officially over and I am now getting ready to have auditions for Closing Night by Craig May on Tuesday and Wednesday nights at 7:00 pm at Community Connections, 2381 Locust Street, Canal Fulton, Ohio. We had six performances of An American Family and 160 people over six nights came to see the play. The feedback is incredibly positive as several people have encouraged that I copyright the play. It is considered a comedy but it contains a great deal of examination of modern social issues. What started in September, 2012 as a writing exercise for me matured into a full length play which lasts about 2 hours fifty five minutes. Most people who watched stated that they were so focused on the play that they did not look at their watches. The acting was superb. My thanks and congratulations go to Geoffrey Darling (Jack Van Wert), Kayla Miller (Janice Loeffler), Janet Antal (Debra Van Wert), Shauna Hamilton (Helen Whiteside/Julie Fielding), Geri Marken (Kate Morrison), Zach Donahue (Tom Van Wert), Shelly Rayborn (Gretchen Van Wert), Josh Rowe (Scott Thomas/Todd/Logan/ the Waiter), Michel Donahue (Petra Thomas/Young Lady), Sharon Nolan (Jeannette Loeffler), Sean Wirfel (Roger Morrison), Melanie Snier (Lesly Morrison), Laura Haines (Blythe Morrison), and Madison Witte (the Waitress/Sandy) for all their hard work in making their characters believable and lovable. Even Sean, who led the curtain call in boos because he plays the villain in this play, was believable and lovable to the audience. I would also like to thank Ike Canfield, Debbie Liknes, Chistine Fager, and Cassandra Fager for all their hard work as stage crew, lights and sound. One would be remiss in forgetting to thank George Dorer for his fine work with the sound and lights. And special thanks goes to Sue Martin and the people of the box office who worked hard in making sure people were seated and accommodated when needed. Also special thanks goes to SALT Box Ministries, St, John Lutheran Church, and Community Connections for all their help and support. An American Family is a real family maker as the cast was sorry for it to end and they are talking about doing things together in the future. And to Shelly Rayborn and Josh Rowe, one who encouraged and one who did shine my bald head during my scene as Harry Loeffler, you will be visited by the ghost of Yul Brynner as he appeared as Chris in the Magnificent Seven. Auditions “Without a Clue” an original comedy written and directed by Breianne Saylor Audition dates and times 8:00 pm on July 13th and 14th Old Town Hall – 5186 Dover Center Road, North Olmsted Auditions will consist of reading scenes from the script. Plot Summary Justin Tyme owns a small hotel that has its share of problems. During a thunderstorm, the maid, Lulu, discovers one of the guests staying at the hotel has been murdered. Brooke, a girl with a broken down car, arrives right before an inept detective. Pretty soon, all of the guests are brought together to figure out the killer’s identity and survive the night. The problems double when Sally Lynch, a building inspector, arrives to evaluate the condition of the hotel. Character Descriptions Justin Tyme – age 20s to 30s. Owner of the Falcon Inn. A bit high strung. Inspector Stumph – age 40s to 50s. A bumbling detective. Howard - any age. A wise-cracking, lazy maintenance man. Doubles as the dead body and is carried around onstage. Slash - 20s. A wannabe British rock star with a horrible fake accent. Mortimer - any age. Indescribable. Wears a cape. Brooke – age 20s to 30s. A smart girl in a bad situation. Lulu – age 20s to 30s. The maid. Not the brightest crayon in the box. Tina – age 20s. Slash's girlfriend. Somewhat neurotic. Has fainting spells. Sally Lynch - age 35+. A building inspector. Very stern and serious. Performances are September 4, 5, 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20. No performance on Sept. 6 for holiday weekend. *Beck Center in Lakewood will hold auditions for the 2015/16 Season Opener "The Spitfire Grill" on Monday, July 13th and Tuesday July 14th.* *Auditions will be by appointment which can be made by calling the Beck Center Box* *Office at 216-521-2540 during regular business hours (9AM to 8PM most days)* *Directed by Beck Center veteran Bill Roudebush, "The Spitfire Grill (based on a 1996 movie by the same name) weaves a beautiful story about a young female parolee who relocates to a small Wisconsin town seemingly on its last legs, and the transformations that occur with her presence.* *USA Today wrote "An Abundance of warmth, spirit, and goodwill!...Some of the most engaging and instantly infectious melodies I've heard in an original musical in some time." * *And from The New York Times---"A soul satisfying work of theatrical resourcefulness. A compelling story that flows with grace and carries the rush of anticipation. The story moves, the characters have many dimensions and their transformations are plausible and moving. The musical is freeing. It is penetrated by honesty and it glows."* *"The Spitfire Grill" features 7 actor/singers (3 Men and 4 Women). The role of Hannah has been cast (Lenne Snively), but the remaining 6 roles are open. One AEA contract remains for this production. All non-union actors 18 and over receive a stipend for their participation.* *ROLES* *Percy Talbot---20-something. Attractive, if a bit rough-edged, her face declares the strength of her youth and a sadness beyond her years. Her accent has a southern Appalachian cadence. Strong folk/country belt to "D" with some head voice required.* *Hannah Ferguson---(CAST)* *Shelby Thorpe---Mid 30's. A plain and soft-faced creature with a shy, almost ethereal manner. Shimmering folk soprano with strong high belt to "D".* *Caleb Thorpe--- Early 40's. Out-of-work foreman of the stone quarry. Frustrated working man clinging to the past. Solid folk/rock voice with an edge (top "G")* *Sheriff Joe Sutter--- Mid to Late 20's. A young small-town policeman with an appealing intensity and a restless nature. Strong folk tenor to a "G" (touches an "A")* *Effy Krayneck--- 50's. Postmistress and busybody, a woman with narrow eyes and a sour tongue. Solid singer in mezzo/alto chest range. Carries close harmonies.* *The Visitor--- Mid 40's. Male. A mysterious figure who never speaks. *Today is the last day to apply for a scholarship at * *Olmsted Performing Arts* http://www.olmstedperformingarts.com/scholarships/ ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP The Olmsted Performing Arts Scholarship Program has been established to provide financial assistance to children ages 18 months to 18 years to further or begin their education of the arts. In alignment with Olmsted Performing Arts’ Mission Statement <http://www.olmstedperformingarts.com/about/> we seek to provide the technical skills of each craft but to also build character, confidence, relationships, and encourage creative expression. A minimum of 3 scholarships will be provided, 2 need-based and 1 desire-based, each scholarship period. Additional scholarships will be contingent on outside support. The scholarship period is August 31, 2015 – August 13, 2016. The recipient of the scholarship will receive 1 class in the department of their choice for the fall, spring and summer session. If the recipient chooses to audition for a production and are cast during the scholarship period, their production fee will be waived. SCHOLARSHIP WINNER SELECTION PROCESS There will be a 3-person selection panel for both the need-based and desire-based scholarships. The selection panel will be comprised of members of the community who have no affiliation with an OPA student, staff, or board member. The applications given to the panel will be anonymous. The decision will be based on the content provided. All questions will have a weighted value. All information provided will be kept confidential. The winners names will be shared with the public only with permission from the winner. Need-based applicants can apply every year. There is no limit to the number of years in a row you can receive the scholarship. Desire-based applicants must wait 2 years to apply again after receiving a scholarship. The Nunsense Vegas Revue By Dan Goggin at Workshop Players Theater on Tuesday, June 30 from 7 - 9pm This is the sixth installment of the Nunsense series, taking the Sisters on a brand new adventure. When a parishioner volunteers to donate $10,000 to the Sisters' school - on the condition that they perform in a Las Vegas club - Mother Superior is hesitant to accept. After being convinced by the other sisters that "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas," Reverend Mother agrees. What follows is the most feather-filled, sequin-studded, fan dancing Nunsense show.
