World premiere of ‘Tear It Off’ tears it up at con-con Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics A play within a play – that literary device where a story being told by a character closely parallels the life of that character – is nearly as old as literature itself. It’s been used by Shakespeare in “Hamlet,” by Chekhov in “The Seagull,” by Brecht in “The Caucasian Chalk Circle” and by local playwright Mike Geither in a new work called “Tear It Off,” which is getting its world premiere production by convergence-continuum. In “Hamlet,” the play being performed by a troupe of strolling actors mirrors the murder of Hamlet’ father, which the Bard uses to provoke Hamlet’s murderous uncle so as to “catch the conscience of the king." Review of "Our Town" at Blank Canvas Theatre

Less is not more in Blank Canvas’ staging of ‘Our Town’ Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics There is an absolutely beguiling simplicity in the prose, structure and traditional staging of Thornton Wilder’s 1938 Pulitzer Prize-winning “Our Town,” currently in production at Blank Canvas Theatre. Because of this stark simplicity, “Our Town” has become a staple in countless high schools and community theaters. The writing is so good and the plain-folk characters are so clearly defined that the play can easily endure, and potentially benefit from, unrefined amateur performances of it. Professional productions tend to tweak the casting or context in order to add to the play’s poignancy, relevancy and theatricality. A recent off-Broadway revival went so far as to break Wilder’s minimalism mandate by introducing a realistic set in a scene where one of the dead revisits the living, in order to dramatically accentuate the divide between life and death. The tweaks performed for Blank Canvas’ rendition, under Patrick Ciamacco’s direction, are minor by comparison and of the subtle variety. The Indie Gathering International Film Festival is now just one week away, coming up August 27th through 30th at The Clarion Inn & Conference Center in Hudson, Ohio - 6625 Dean Memorial Parkway. Don't miss out on the networking event of the year! Actors, aside from networking with producers and directors for four days, you can actually perform for them in our individual monologue competition. This year's judges represent California, Illinois, Kentucky, New York, and the country of Georgia. We also have talent representatives/scouts in attendance and producers looking to cast directly for their projects. So bring plenty of business cards and headshots! The 1st round of competition is Saturday at 10am, with finals held Sunday at 10am. We have multiple age divisions for both male and female categories, with winners in each, as well as best overall actor. Early registration has passed, but you can still register at the door. Competing includes a weekend pass. The Indie Gathering is a yearly gathering of filmmakers from around the world, all staying in one hotel and going to the events within.
