Cleveland Public Theatre announces Auditions for BARBECUE Written by Robert O'Hara. Directed by Beth Wood. About the play... In this hilarious and devastating dark comedy by Robert O'Hara (Bootycandy, Antebellum), the O'Mallerys have gathered in their local park to share some barbecue and straight talk with their train wreck of a sister Barbara, whose spiral of drugs and recklessness has forced her siblings to stage an open-air intervention. But the event becomes raucous and unpredictable as familial stereotypes collide with hard realities, and racial politics slam up against the stories we tell-and maybe even believe-about who we were and who we've become. "Fearless" - The New York Times - Regional Premiere. Looking to cast... 1 Woman - African American- Movie Star Barbara, age 30-40 (a very successful pop star & movie star) 1 Man - Caucasian - James T, age 50-60 (an unsuccessful, pseudo-functioning alcoholic) 1 Woman - African American - Adlean, age 30-45 (a breast cancer patient, addicted to pain killers All other roles have been cast. Equity Agreements may be available for this production About the process... Rehearsals for this production will begin in early January 2017. Tech will be the weekend of February 11th. Performances will be in the Gordon Square Theatre on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays at 7:30pm, February 16th - March 11th. This production will have one weekend of preview performances February 16th - 18th & 23rd (no show February 20th), and will then rehearse until the opening night on Friday, February 24th. Audition... Medina Show Biz Opening You Can’t Take It with You this Friday Medina, OH – On October 14, 2016, Medina Show Biz is excited to open their 36th season with You Can’t Take It with You, a hilarious comedy by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman, and directed by Frank Lucas. The play will run Oct 14-30, Fridays & Saturdays 7:30pm, and Sundays 2:00p, at the Haddad Theater inside the Medina County Administration Building, located at 144 N. Broadway, Medina, Ohio. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and students 18 and under. Tickets are available at Buehler’s or online at www.medinashowbiz.org. The plot follows the wacky Sycamore family, headed up by patriarch Grandpa Vanderhof (Charlie Richards). This family blissfully goes through life doing whatever brings them joy. Some of their favorite hobbies include ballet dancing, painting, building fireworks, writing plays, and collecting snakes. Their happy existence is interrupted when young Alice Sycamore (Natalina Kotori) becomes engaged to Kirby & Co. Vice President, Tony Kirby (Andrew Knode). Alice does her best to whip her family into shape to meet the new In-laws over a perfectly “normal” dinner, but disaster strikes when the Kirby’s arrive a day early, to find the Vanderhof/Sycamore clan in all their glory. The six-evening run includes 8 PM performances on Fridays and Saturdays through November 5. Tickets are $12, general admission. WHO'S AFRAID was Albee's Broadway debut and won five Tony Awards, including Best Play, in 1963. It ran for more than a year and a half, finding its way to the big screen in 1966 with the famous Mike Nichols adaptation starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. Albee's ruthless and riveting drama has been enthralling and shocking audiences ever since. CVLT's production features actors Rob Walter and Darlene Rocco as 'George' and 'Martha', the embittered married couple who invite their younger counterparts, 'Nick' (John Hickman) and 'Honey' (Jennifer Betz), over for a night-cap following a university faculty party. What begins as a friendly invitation quickly spirals into a booze-soaked battle of psychological warfare, hurtling through the darker sides of marriage, academia, and the human condition, to reach an explosive conclusion. As with all of Albee's works, WHO'S AFRAID holds an often-unflattering mirror up to its characters and, by extension, the audience. In interviews with the New York Times and The Guardian, Albee described it as the writer's job to raise that mirror. "All of my plays are about people missing the boat, closing down too young, coming to the end of their lives with regret at things not done, as opposed to things done," he said. "We're not merely decorative, pleasant, and safe." CVLT's River Street Playhouse is the venerable non-profit's intimate 62-seat "black box" stage, offering audiences an up-close seat for the withering dialog and emotional fireworks on stage. WHO'S AFRAID was seen at CVLT in the same space thirty-four years ago. The script contains very strong language and adult themes and is therefore not recommended for sensitive audiences or those under age sixteen. The evening will include a Sweet & Savory Wine Reception, Live Victrola music from Madame L the Time Traveling Victrola DJ, a blind wine raffle, and dramatic portrayal of Edgar Allan Poe by Literary Historian, and living history performer, Rob Velella. Man of La Mancha is a Broadway musical, which was adapted from Dale Wasserman's non-musical 1959 teleplay I, Don Quixote, which was in turn inspired by Miguel de Cervantes and his seventeenth-century masterpiece Don Quixote. As Cervantes and his fellow prisoners await a hearing with the Spanish Inquisition, he enacts a play, which tells the story of a "mad" knight, Don Quixote, who finds heaven in the personage of the common prostitute, Aldonza. As the alternately hilarious and heart-wrenching musical continues, Cervantes manages to transform the hardened, hopeless prisoners of the Spanish Inquisition into a congregation of faith and hope. The principal song, "The Impossible Dream", has become a standard around the world.
