Submit scripts: PLAYground 2017 at Talespinner Children's Theatre

PLAYground is an exciting program, now in its second year, that showcases new works for children by Cleveland-area writers during this two-week intensive workshop in July of 2017. Writers (using local directors, and actors age 16 and up) will be given one week's rehearsal to showcase their works in true workshop fashion, book in hand, and one weekend to perform that workshop for the public, complete with audience talk-backs following performance. During the week, they are given full use of the TCT rehearsal space, stage, and access to puppets, props, and costumes. PLAYground gives Cleveland-area writers a chance to put their work up on its feet, to help provide development of ideas, and exposure to the public. Plays submitted to PLAYground may be considered for future, full-stage production by TCT. Website: http://talespinnerchildrenstheatre.org/performances/playground.htm WHAT: PLAYground gives local writers a chance to develop their work in a professional environment, with support from TCT. After a week's rehearsal, the workshop piece will be presented to the public in two performances over one weekend. HOW: TCT will provide directors, stage managers, and actors--age 16 and up, rehearsal and performance space, their prop and puppet stock, and costumes. PLAYground will also be fully marketed as part of TCT's 2017 programming. WHEN: PLAYground runs (including rehearsals) from July 1st through July 16th. Performances take place Saturdays, July 8th & 15th, and Sundays, July 9th & 16th. Each play will get two performances, and fully moderated talk-backs. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Opens: January 8, 2017 (Please do not submit PLAYground scripts prior to this date.) Deadline for all submissions: March 1st Submit: A preliminary script, with a list of characters, and a synopsis. It is understood that re-writes will happen between acceptance and rehearsals, but any major changes must be approved by TCT, as the work accepted must be recognizable by beginning of the program. All major changes to character must be completed by April 15th so that casting can begin at that time. Please make sure that your name and contact information--including email--is printed clearly on the front page of the submission. Submissions not clearly labeled will not be considered. CRITERIA: Writers must be based in the Cleveland area. Out of state or out of region submissions will not be accepted for this program. (Please feel free to contact TCT at the email address below if you would like to know if your area is included.) Scripts must be an adaptation of, or based on, an international folktale, faerie tale, mythology, or work from another discipline (i.e. ballet, opera, orchestra, literature.) All materials on which work is based must be in the public domain. Scripts will not be considered if they are based on materials that hold current copyright. All materials on which work is based must be noted for reference. (i.e.: "this work is based on the German folktale, Ashputel.") All submissions must be world premieres. PLAYground will not accept scripts that have been performed at other establishments. Writers should be willing to work collaboratively with TCT and the artists involved in the program, and be available for rehearsals and all performances in the program. Submitting writers cannot have had a full production in any TCT producing season. Folksongs or appropriate music can be included, but orchestration and instrumentation must all be able to be produced vocally, or with alternate, available, creative instruments. TCT does not use pre-recorded materials. Musical direction will not be provided, and links to source music must be provided by writer. Scripts can be no longer than 45 pages. From Page to Stage: That's My Story and I'm Sticking to It w/Marc Moritz ($65 / 55 for members) Saturdays 1/14-2/4, 10a-12p, Gordon Square Arcade, 6516 Detroit Ave. With the motto of "Good stories don’t happen to good storytellers, good storytellers tell good stories," this four-week workshop will focus on creating one short story/piece sourced from personal experience and putting it on its feet and on paper. Workshop participants will engage in theatre games/acting exercises that will focus on bringing and sharing their own funny, sad or maddening experiences which inspire their work. If you find yourself in love with The Moth, DNTO, This American Life and the myriad of storytelling shows out there, this workshop will get your hands dirty and leave you with your very own oral/written piece. Marc originated the role of Talk Show Host in the original Broadway production of the Sondheim/Prince musical Merrily We Roll Along and has worked in dozens of theaters across the U.S. He was also the Founder/Director of the Cleveland based Giant Portions Improv Troupe. His improv training includes stints at ImprovOlympic and extensive workshops with Paul Sills, Del Close and Charna Halpern. Marc was a Visiting Guest Artist at Cornell University, where he coached students and performed in productions as a professional mentor. Marc has taught Acting and Improv at AMDA, CAP 21, among many other professional acting programs. Marc currently teaches Speech and Communication at John Carroll University as well as On-Camera Broadcasting. He received his MFA in Acting at Kent State University.

French Creek Theatre is pleased to announce auditions for... BLOOM by Andrew Morton Directed by Skip Corris Following the death of his father, 15-year-old Daniel and his mother, Lisa, are forced to move to an unfamiliar new city. After a violent outburst at his new school, Daniel's social worker, Michelle, suggests he spend a week working with her father, Bobby, an urban gardener of several abandoned lots in the middle of the city. A week soon turns into a few months, and, as the two men spend the summer tending the gardens, they begin to plant some much-needed hope in a neighborhood plagued by blight and help each other heal some old wounds. PERFORMANCES March 31 - April 9 Fridays & Saturdays at 7PM Sundays at 3PM AUDITIONS January 23 & 24 7PM - 9PM Open call. Actors may prepare a monologue, but is not required. DANIEL - At risk teenager, 15; Sullen, uncommunicative; grows and matures as a result of working on the garden with BOBBY. LISA - DANIEL's mother, 40s; Newly widowed, attending community college and working while trying to rebuild a life for herself and DANIEL. ASHLEY - BOBBY's neighbor, 16. Also on MICHELLE's caseload; has made some bad choices. Grows through DANIEL's friendship. What exactly is The Manhattan Project - Cleveland Lab? The Manhattan Project is a low-stakes, nonthreatening place for actors and playwrights to meet and work together. Based on the Theatre Lab model taught at the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama and inspired by The Brooklyn Generator in New York, The Manhattan Project wants to introduce Cleveland actors and playwrights to each other by organizing a bi-monthly production of brand new 10-minute plays. Participating artists will meet early in the month and will be broken into teams, each with one playwright. The playwright will then be given a writing prompt to write a new 10-minute play based on the prompt and including all the team's actors. The rest of the evening the team members will get to know each other and get a feel for each other's skills and voices. The teams will reconvene later in the month to perform these plays for each other. These 10-minute plays are not an end in themselves. Through these small collaborations we hope to build relationships between the two most vulnerable artists in theatre; the actors who put themselves on stage and the playwrights who pour themselves onto the page. Perhaps these 10-minute plays will grow into longer works or maybe these collaborations will become partnerships on larger projects.
