Great Lakes Theater’s ‘Wait Until Dark’ not worth the wait Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics In the 1960s, with “Psycho,” “Repulsion” and “The Manchurian Candidate” at the cinema and the novels of Agatha Christie and Patricia Highsmith on the shelf, playwright Frederick Knott’s psychological thriller “Wait Until Dark” was a welcome and well-received addition. The play is about a recently blinded woman, who is terrorized in her basement apartment by three con men searching for a lost doll stuffed with narcotics. When the doll can’t be found, the situation spirals out of control and Suzy must attempt to outwit her assailants by turning her physical disadvantage into a strategic weapon. Psychological thrillers have become more sophisticated in the 50 years since “Wait Until Dark” first took to the stage. As a result, our entertainment expectations and genre-IQ have been raised, which makes it impossible to watch this chestnut without noticing everything dated about it. To quote Steve Sucatos article published May 20th, 2016: For Gladisa Guadalupes new Cleveland Ballet, the decision to hire Spanish choreographer Ramón Oller to create its very first story ballet was genius.the world premiere of Ollers re-envisioned Coppélia, was just what Clevelands newest resident ballet company needed to advanced its goals of becoming a force on the local dance scene and beyond. Cleveland Ballet commissioned Oller to create a new version of this classic story. The story based on William Shakespeares comedy is about a night in which supernatural effects, fairies, romantic misadventures and fantasy characters intertwine between imagination and reality. Chili Challis having been recently swamped with a TV project, touring, and his online presence is taking the time to come to The Orrville community Theater to do a special 4 hours workshop of comedy performance and writing. This event will include writing, performance tips and a personal critique after each comic is allowed to perform. Chili Challis Has been a writer on The Tonight show with Jay Leno and wrote and performed on The Bob and Tom Show, he has been a creative consultant, an author, and a father. After some conversations with community members, the vision is for the Cleveland Young Arts Professionals Network is shaping to be a connecting link for non-profit, for-profit, and individual young professionals in the arts and culture sector of the Cleveland community. I want to make sure this organization helps fulfill whatever the needs are for the arts & culture community, so I’m hosting a few ‘brainstorming’ sessions to find out what exactly those needs are.
