Kasumi is uncanny. She is a recipient of a 2011 Guggenheim fellowship. She's a force in the experimental film and art world. Her latest film Shockwaves will jar your senses awake! Kasumi is an artist who works in a broad range of media: directing and producing short and feature length experimental films, performing live shows and VJ, creating looping electronic sculptures, designing motion graphics and animated gifs, producing immersive 360 virtual reality pieces and making fine art prints through glitch and data moshing. Her work explores memory and our collective consciousness. I sat down with Kasumi at her Cleveland home several months ago on a snowy afternoon. We enjoyed some fabulous lemon water and recorded an almost meditative conversation. We talked about topics ranging from Donald Trump, to her artistic process, how we interpret consciousness and the deeper connections between our art and our personal lives. This episode starts off with a story about an experience I recently had attending a funeral of a colleague. It got me thinking: What makes a person? Is it their mind, spirit, thoughts or physical gestures? Is it a combination of all of these things? Is all the life, awareness and matter around us just a never ending loop of destruction and rebirth? These questions then tie into a really valuable conversation with the Artist known as Kasumi. WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH BEGINS EARLY AT KENT STATE UNIVERSITY AT STARK AS THEATRE PRESENTS SILENT SKY, FEB. 24-26, MARCH 3-5 (NORTH CANTON, OH, Feb. 20, 2017) – March is Women’s History Month, and the Kent State University at Stark Theatre Department’s production of Silent Sky sets the stage for the campus’ month long observance. Silent Sky, by Lauren Gunderson, is the fourth consecutive theatre production here written by a woman, and very much about women’s voices and struggles, according to Brian Newberg, Associate Professor of Theatre and Theatre Director at Kent State Stark. The play will be performed on Feb. 24-26 and March 3-4 at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 26 and March 5 at 2 p.m. in the Kent State Stark Theatre, 6000 Frank Ave., NW, in Jackson Township. American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation will be provided for the March 5 performance at 2 p.m. Based on the true story of Henrietta Leavitt, take a journey in Leavitt’s shoes as a female astronomer at the Harvard Observatory in the early 1900s – a time when the ideas of women did not come to fruition until men accredited the theories for their own gain. Leavitt must learn to accommodate her love of science with her family responsibilities, and her place as a woman. She transcended her post as a Harvard “computer” (data entry clerk) to make significant observations on the universe, and influence the work of Edwin Hubble, among others. Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $7 for non-Kent State students and senior citizens. All Kent State students are admitted free of charge with current student ID. Tickets are on sale now. Improv 1: Play Nathaniel Montgomery Improv Improv 1 is designed to get you up and playing. This six-week workshop offers progressively challenging (and fun) improv exercises in a low-pressure environment. You will learn to tap into your natural spontaneity, creativity and your willingness to take risks. Improv 1 is rooted in the teachings of Keith Johnstone (a Canadian improv teacher and author of Impro). Mr. Johnstone emphasizes the need to get the improvisers in an ‘anxiety-free’ state, to get them working well together (building upon each other’s ideas), and to use improv as a form of story-telling, not just for gags and jokes. Improv 1 is great for beginners as well as those with prior improv experience. This class may be repeated any number of times!
