Review of "Pipeline" at Cleveland Play House

Cleveland Play House’s ‘Pipeline’ connects emotionally, civically Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal With poor, young African-American, Native American, and Latinx students being suspended and expelled from school more frequently than their middle-class white counterparts, often resulting in disenfranchisement and criminalization, it is little wonder that playwrights have been calling for social justice in their theater-making. Anna Deavere Smith’s trailblazing “Notes From the Field,” which appeared off-Broadway in 2016, offers a collection of open-wound monologues culled from interviews with actual first-responders. They include Sherrilyn Ifill, President and Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, who provides a sobering overview of what is being called the “school-to-prison pipeline,” and Rev. Jamal-Harrison Bryant, who spoke at the 2015 funeral of a young black man who died at the hands of Baltimore police officers. Dominique Morisseau has taken a different approach with “Pipeline,” which was first seen at New York City’s Lincoln Center in 2017 and is now in production by the Cleveland Play House under Steve H. Broadnax III’s direction. She provides an intense, didactic dramatization of an African-American family on the front line of the crisis. [ REGISTER NOW ]( https://www.showclix.com/event/intimacy-workshop ) CLASS DESCRIPTION In this workshop, participants learn specific techniques for accessing their vulnerability in a dramatic context, resulting in powerful chemistry between characters without compromising personal boundaries. Focus is on subtle and specific details in choreography, and on acting exercises to keep partners connected physically and emotionally. It is an exploration of intimacy within a dramatic context for the purpose of telling the story of the scene. This class also touches on how to approach preparing for scenes of intimacy in rehearsal, consent, boundaries, your rights, and psychological safety. This is not just kissing or sex scenes. The principles can include the intimacy between parents and children, between dear friends, and can also apply to scenes of sexual violence. Touching (handshakes, handholding, hugging) through guided contact improv is part of the course. Kissing is not required. While the goal is to explore emotional and physical intimacy, the core concept of this work is Safety, for the facilitation of safe exploration. All touching is consensual, and participants are always invited to sit out and watch, should they feel uncomfortable or triggered. While this introductory workshop is geared towards a performer's perspective, participants are welcome from all theatrical disciplines to participate and learn more about intimacy for the stage. GOALS To train the students in a working knowledge of the basic principles of Intimacy for the Stage. Focusing on The Pillars of Intimacy, students will learn how to advocate for their own safety when an Intimacy Director is not present, collaborate with an Intimacy Director when one is present, and explore specificity within moments of Intimacy. FORMAT Each class will follow the structure: introduction to concept, practice, discussion. TOPICS INCLUDED Instant Chemistry: simple acting exercises to facilitate mutual trust and to create chemistry with any scene partner Consent: physical work and emotional preparation for more effective scenes of intimacy The Pillars: guidelines for approaching scenes of Intimacy, including script work, communication of personal boundaries, consent, and other professional etiquette practices Playing with Specificity: techniques and ideas to begin exploring your own methods of maintaining your own psychological health, assuring your own resilience and the quality of your craft WHAT IS IDI? Intimacy Directors International (IDI) is a not for profit organization comprised of artists from around the world who are trained to choreograph and direct scenes of an intimate nature for the stage and screen. She has her BFA from the University of Wyoming and her MFA from Florida Atlantic University. A Jeff Nominated Fight Choreographer. She is also an advanced actor/combatant with the Society of American Fight Directors and an intermediate actor/combatant with Fight Directors Canada. In all her work, Samantha is dedicated to the growth and development of the art form and the artists, in order to support a vibrant and healthy artistic community. Samantha is a certified Intimacy Director with IDI. She has been staging intimacy for years but since completing the Intimacy Directors International’s O’Neill Pedagogy Intensive her hunger to spread this work has grown daily. Hudson Players Celebrates 75th Anniversary Season Noises Off, Company, and Bright Star Will Delight Audience Members What began as an idea developed over coffee at Saywell's Drugstore in 1945 has blossomed into The Hudson Players celebrating its 75th anniversary season of producing award-winning entertainment in northeast Ohio. While a previous Hudson theatre guild was founded in the 1920s, its run ended in the late 1930s. The current Hudson Players organization owes its existence to Glad Lewis and 8 other Hudsonites who were inspired to revive community theatre in Hudson 75 years ago. The community embraced the idea and the first production, a one-act melodrama called Fireman Save My Child, attracted a sold-out crowd inside the historic Town Hall Building for its single performance. The only one not happy was the fire marshal who was concerned about the over-flowing crowd. >From that point on the Hudson Players staged three plays every year. Membership grew as the town of Hudson grew and the group established a reputation throughout northeast Ohio for quality theatre that continues to this day. >From those humble beginnings the Hudson Players have gone on to present more than 200 productions. The shows bring visitors to Hudson from all over the state. Many of the shows also have been recognized by the Ohio Community Theatre Association for their excellence. This year's slate of shows has something for everyone, kicking off in November with a revival of audience favorite Noises Off, the hilarious British farce about a play within a play. The show opens November 1st and runs for three weekends. Next up is Company, Stephen Sondheim's revered musical about a single guy celebrating his 35th birthday with his married friends, with famous songs such as "Being Alive" and "Ladies Who Lunch," which will be presented in February. The Hudson Players' season concludes in late April with the Ohio community theatre premiere of Bright Star, a new, blue-grass-inspired musical from Steve Martin and Edie Brickell that tells the story of a driven magazine editor whose life is forever changed when a young man returning from WWII becomes a vivid reminder of her long-hidden past. As part of the 75th anniversary celebration, The Hudson Players are planning a gala event, set for March 7, 2020. As part of the festivities, plans are underway to present Fireman, Save My Child, the original one-act that jump-started the group in 1945. The shoot is unpaid and non-union; copy, credit, and on-set meals will be provided. The film is about a younger Bruce Wayne and friends during their college years, pre-Batman.
