‘Once’ at the Beck Center entrances but does not transport Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal “Once” is a romantic piece of storytelling so unassuming that “Once upon a time” is too pretentious a preamble. And its melancholic tale of star-crossed love is so universal that the young, working-class dreamers at its center are identified only as “Guy” and “Girl.” Based on the 2007 Indie movie by John Carney, this multiple Tony Award-winning musical composed by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova revolves around a disheartened young street musician who is grieving over the loss of a girl, the lack of commercial prospects for his folk-rock songwriting, and the isolation of living with his Da above their tiny repair shop in Dublin, Ireland. The show opens with him singing one of his gorgeous, angst-filled Irish anthems, throwing away his guitar pick when the song is through, and walking away from his guitar and his music forever. That is, until he is stopped in his tracks by a young Czech immigrant who is so blindly optimistic about his potential that she reinstates his passion for music and is so absolutely adorable that he rediscovers love. But they are unable to act on their feelings toward each other because she is married to a man no longer in her heart and he is still connected to the woman who left. What makes “Once” more than just another romantic tale of despondency is the absolutely charming way the story is told. Its creators threw away the elaborate production values they did not need and amplified the theatricality in everything they did. CPH’s swashbuckling ‘Sherwood’ parodies as it parries Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal The Cleveland Play House’s love affair with Tony Award-winning contemporary playwright Ken Ludwig continues. After staging world premiere productions of his “Leading Ladies” in 2004, “The Game’s Afoot” in 2011, “A Comedy of Tenors” to open its centennial season in 2015, and “Ken Ludwig’s Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery” in 2017, Ludwig’s latest work is on stage at the Allen Theatre. It is easy to see the attraction. Ludwig has mastered the farce formula – the silly situations that escalate into mayhem, the witty repartee delivered at lightning speed, and the performance of highly stylized, high-energy physical funny-business. And his most recent plays, which are comical take-offs of others’ serious works, are branded with his very own name in their titles. “Ken Ludwig's Sherwood: The Adventures of Robin Hood” was commissioned by and received its world premiere at The Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, CA in 2017 under the less audacious but more assertively punctuated title “Robin Hood!” Its subsequent name change is due, in part, to avoid comparisons with the many other modern retellings of the Robin Hood legend but, of course, comparisons are inevitable. On Friday, February 22, 2019, the Shaker Arts Council (SHAC) will present Conversations in Courage: A Staged Reading of "The Meeting", a fictional conversation between Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The reading will star Peter Lawson Jones as Malcolm X and Greg White as Martin Luther King, Jr. and will be directed by Monica Lee Boone. The performance will be held at Heights Christian Church, 17300 Van Aken Blvd., Shaker Heights, OH 44120. The evening begins at 7:30 pm, and tickets are $15 for students and $25 for adults.
