Hathaway Brown Theatre Institute Summer 2019 Production Season * OLIVER! and A NEW BRAIN* Auditions for 2019 season: February 8th (6:30-8:30 pm) Feb 9th (2:30-5:30 pm) Feb. 10th(12-3 pm) Call backs/A New Brain - Feb 10th (3:30-7 pm) Call backs /Oliver!-Feb.23rd (4-6 pm), Feb.24th (1-6 pm) General auditions for the shows will be held together. Callbacks will be held separately. The rehearsal schedule is set up so that students can participate in both productions. Email for an appointment: hbti_auditions(a)hb.edu Please prepare a one minute memorized musical selection that is character driven and a one minute memorized monologue from a play. Bring sheet music - an accompanist will be provided. There will be dance call for Oliver! at call backs. Please Note: to be eligible to participate in this production you must attend at least 1 session of HBTI 2019 Summer Training. There is a production fee associated with each show. *OLIVER!*, with music and lyrics by Lionel Bart is based on the Charles Dickens novel, Oliver Twist. HBTI's production of Oliver runs for 6 performances: June 28 - July 7, 2019. It is directed and choreographed by Bebe Weinberg Katz, musical direction by John Krol and set design by T.Paul Lowry. This Tony award-winning musical adaptation of the classic Dickens’ novel springs to life with some of the memorable characters and songs ever to hit the stage; Food Glorious Food, Where Is Love, Consider Yourself and As Long As He Needs Me to name just a few of the songs that earned Lionel Bart the Tony for Best Original Score. OLIVER is one of the few musicals to win an academy award for Best Picture and is widely hailed as a true theatrical masterpiece by actor and audiences alike. About OLIVER!: The streets of Victorian England come to life as Oliver, a malnourished orphan in a workhouse,becomes a neglected apprentice of an undertaker. Oliver escapes to London and finds acceptance among a group of petty thieves and pickpockets lead by elderly Fagin. When Oliver is captured for a theft he did not commit, the benevolent victim, Mr Brownlow, takes him in. Fearing for the safety of his hideout, Fagin employs the sinister Bill Sikes and sympathetic Nancy to kidnap him back, leaving Oliver’s chances of discovering the true love of family. Here is an energetic, sardonic, often comical musical about a composer during a medical emergency. Gordon collapses into his lunch and awakes in the hospital surrounded by his maritime-enthusiast lover, his mother, a co-worker, the doctor and the nurses. Reluctantly, he had been composing a song for a children’s television show that features a frog- Mr. Bungee- and the specter of the this large green character and unfinished work haunts him throughout his medical ordeal. What was thought to be a tumor turns out to be something more operable and Gordon recovers, grateful for a chance to compose the songs he yearns to produce. *The Dark Room at CPT on February 12th * *This month: Featured Reading of Would It Were Bedtime, and All Well by Robert Hawkes and Open Mic! * The Dark Room is a place where writers take center stage and their work has a chance to grow. The Dark Room is an ongoing event held on the second Tuesday of each month. The Dark Room affords emerging and veteran playwrights the space and resources to develop new works. It offers a venue to workshop plays, novels, poems, or any other written work in a supportive, yet critical environment. *Tuesday, February 12th* The Church at CPT (Just east of the Gordon Square Theatre Box Office) Cleveland Public Theatre 6407 Detroit Ave, Cleveland, OH 44102 *7:00pm: *Sign-up begins for writers and actors (space is limited). It is, in fact, his first “lead” (principal talk) for Alcoholics Anonymous, which he has joined in hopes of regaining the favor of Prince Hal, now Henry V. The situation is necessarily de-chronologized, but then the Fat Knight is a character for ages - his own and all subsequent. His struggle to find the foundation of a real sobriety might be anybody's. And what we recognize as his foolishness, selfishness, and cowardice in his recollection of some of his exploits is, as in the plays, our own vulnerable humanity. *ABOUT THE WRITER: *Robert Hawkes is the author of four produced plays: The Importance of Waiting for the Eagle (CPT Big [BOX], 2014), Give Me the Map (convergence-continuum Tweener series, 2016), The Casual Tree Ward (convergence-continuum main stage, 2018), and The Silence of Dr & Mrs Caligari (Playwrights Local, 2018). He has acted at many Cleveland area theatres, and is a member of the acting company and Board of Directors at convergence-continuum, where he has appeared in seventeen plays. “Heart to HeART: A Family Friendly Valentine's Day Show!” The Akron Center for Art, Music, and Performance, a multi-use, interdisciplinary venue available to artists and creatives, will host “Heart to HeART: A Family Friendly Valentine’s Day Show!” for families and parents with children who are looking to experience a romantic night out. DATE & TIME: Thursday, February 14 @ 6:00 pm LOCATION: The Center • 118 W. Market Street, Akron, OH 44303 There will be light refreshments for sale and a live performance of classic loves songs played by Pony Up. Kyle Jozsa of Wandering Aesthetics and Nici Romo of Dunamis Theatre will lead crafts and games for children ages 3 and up beginning at 6:30 pm.
