Gum-Dip Theatre premieres Three Countries, One Mother, a solo performance featuring Lead Artist NimBrother (Neema Bal). *The play opened on July 22 and runs through August 14, 2022 on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 3 p.m. at the Balch Street Theater (220 S. Balch St).* Using storytelling, poetry, movement, and song, Three Countries, One Mother examines the history and culture of the Bhutanese-Nepali-American people who were displaced from their homeland as part of the Bhutanese Refugee Crisis in the 1990s and early 2000s. This play is inspired by the true story of NimBrother’s family– members of the Tamang tribe, an ethnic group in the Bhutanese-Nepali community. The Tamang tribe speaks their own Tibeto-Burman language and has a diverse spectrum of influences on spirituality--including Buddhism and indigenous shamanism. Spanning generations and countries, this deeply personal narrative weaves together family stories and shamanic ritual to explore the impact of cultural legacy on an individual. The audience is invited to journey with Neema through his cultural inheritance as part of a quest to better understand himself. NimBrother is a physical theatre artist who presents the stories of his community in a way that not only reflects and heals the traumas from the past, but also creates a space for reimagining a positive future. He is a former refugee from the Bhutanese-Nepali-American community who resettled in Akron in 2013 and became a citizen of the United States in 2019. This role requires leadership and initiative; and reports to the Executive Artistic Director (EAD). This role participates in leading the theatre and supporting the EAD in strategy and decision-making. The TD manages and implements all technical aspects of productions, except costumes, for CPT's season, consisting of 6-12 full productions, 2-4 new work development series, 2 multi-site special events, and other artistic projects. CPT programs in two theatres, various onsite studios, and occasionally produces work offsite in nontraditional spaces. The TD will lead the building of this department, and will work with the EAD and the artistic department to grow capacity. For the 2022/2023 Season, the TD oversees and works with CPT's Technical Associate and some over-hire technicians to implement all sets, lighting, video, and sound installations. The TD is responsible for oversight of CPT's scene shop and technical equipment. The TD is also offered opportunities to work as a designer; and therefore, receives additional compensation for major projects. Candidates must have three years full-time technical theatre work experience (or equivalent as a freelancer) with excellent technical skills in the following areas: sound technician, master electrician, and set construction. Expertise in some of the following skills is also a plus: sound design, lighting design/video design/implementation, and scenic design. The successful candidate will be collaborative, eager to learn new ways of working, service oriented, and highly self-motivated. Join us each month for an informal old-time jam session at The Music Settlement's Ohio City campus as we learn and share folk tunes by ear. This music is the kind you might hear at square dances or contra dances. Everyone is welcome -- bring your instrument! Open to fiddle/violin, viola, cello, double bass, banjo, guitar, mandolin and dulcimer (mountain or hammer). Musicians should have at minimum some experience and familiarity with their instrument. This program is free of charge, but donations are welcome! All donations will support the mission of The Music Settlement and the talented team who coordinates these events. Beginning in 2018 Wandering Aesthetics brought theatre back to the village with their summer youth performances, A Play Within a Play on a Midsummer’s Day and The Jungle Book. This summer, venture “down the rabbit hole” with Wandering Aesthetics… Based on the works of Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures is a youth educational production that follows Alice through the looking glass on her journey to becoming queen.
