Seven times a charm at Great Lakes Theater’s ‘Mamma Mia!’ Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, American Theatre Critics Association While the moral at the end of the jukebox musical “Mamma Mia!” is that true love comes but once in a lifetime, the show itself apparently comes with much greater frequency. A national tour of Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus’ global smash hit has visited Playhouse Square in 2002, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2016. And, in the spirit of full disclosure, I’ve not been a fan of any of them. Not a fan of the Swedish band Abba, whose pop songs make up the show’s score. Not a fan of kitschy jukebox musicals. The show’s sit-com storyline is a paper-thin vehicle to string together over 20 of Abba’s highly synthesized ‘70’s disco tunes, which often erupt in highly caffeinated fashion and with little provocation. Playwrights Local (http://playwrightslocal.org/) Seeks multiple cast members For a staged reading on Thursday, October 18 *The Adventures of* *Fleische **Michecha of Rumilshtenikisigov* A new play by Matthew Greenfield Directed by Erik Andrews Synopsis The title character is a quiet Jewish boy-turned-man coping with a mysterious “pain” and very interesting times in the early 20th century: forced to leave his titular home town and wander around the world in service of the Tzar in two bloody wars, Fleische gets caught up in the turmoil of the Russian Revolution and eventually decides to immigrate to America, coming to terms with the “home-less” nature of the Diaspora and discovering a resilient home within himself in the face of the massive historical pressures of pogroms, wars, revolutions, and assimilation. Cast (All perform multiple roles in epic-style play) *ACTOR A: *Fleische *ACTOR D: *Various roles including Census-Taker, Naval Officer, Japanese Officer, and American Offering Job * ACTOR E: *Various roles including Soldier, Russian Sailor, and Japanese Soldier, and stage directions There will be 1-2 rehearsals in North Collinwood. Singers will be backed with a full band, set in one of the city's most forward thinking music venues. **5 PAID vocalist roles available, to be determined based on auditions. Karamu fouls off a few while swinging for the ‘Fences’ Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, American Theatre Critics Association Actor Denzel Washington, who won a Tony in 2010 for his portrayal of protagonist Troy Maxson in the Broadway revival of August Wilson’s Pulitzer-winning “Fences,” recently led a $5 million fundraising effort to restore the playwright’s childhood home, to be completed in 2020. While watching the current production of the play at Karamu, it is very easy to understand Wilson’s legacy and appreciate Washington’s passion for preserving where it began.
