Synopsis: The story revolves around the relationships of three middle-aged single siblings, two of whom live together, and takes place during a visit by the third, Masha, who supports them. They discuss their lives and loves, argue, and Masha threatens to sell the house. Some of the show's elements were derived from works of Anton Chekhov, including several character names and sibling relationships, the play's setting in a country house (in Bucks County, Pennsylvania) with a vestigial cherry orchard, the performance of an "avant-garde" play by one of the main characters (as in The Seagull), and the themes of old vs. new generations, real vs. assumed identities, the challenges of a woman growing older after successes in a career that seems to be ending, the hope and carelessness of youth, intrafamilial rivalries, and the possible loss of an ancestral home. * The character descriptions below should NOT be taken as literal guidelines for casting. They offer a very broad outline to give a rough idea of character types. * Before auditioning, actors are strongly encouraged to read the play. * Roles are open to all ethnicity and gender identities. * We ask that all who are auditioning at this time read our Safety and Covid policies. Chagrin Arts Announces the Return of Callisto Quartet Chagrin Falls, OH- On Friday July 15, 2022 at 7 pm, Callisto Quartet returns to Chagrin Arts for the fourth year for an evening of incomparable chamber music. Presented in partnership with The City of Solon, the concert will take place at Solon Center for the Arts, located at 6315 SOM Center Road, Solon OH 44139. Members of the Quartet are Cameron Daly, violin; Gregory Lewis, violin; Eva Kennedy, viola and Hannah Moses, cello. The Quartet will be playing the Haydn Quartet op.76 no 4, Debussy String Quartet in G Minor and Mendelssohn Quartet op, 13. Tickets are $20 for Adults and $10 for Seniors and Students and are available at www.chagrinarts.org or by calling 440-247-9700. The concert is presented with the generous support of Ohio Arts Council and Cuyahoga Arts and Culture. Since Its formation in 2016, the Quartet has garnered top prizes in every major international chamber music competition and has been hailed by audiences across North America and Europe. Grand prize winners of the 2018 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and Second Prize Winners of the 2019 Banff International String Quartet Competition, the Callisto Quartet has also taken home prizes from the Bordeaux (2019), Melbourne (2018), and Wigmore Hall (2018) competitions. The quartet has formerly held residencies at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music and the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid, Spain, and from 2020-2022 was the Ernst Stiefel Quartet in Residence at Caramoor Center for Music and Arts. The Quartet has performed at many renowned chamber music festivals such as the La Jolla Music Society Summerfest, the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, the Emilia Romagna Festival, and the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival in 2018, at the invitation of Gerhard Schulz, they attended the Prussia Cove International Musicians Seminar. As a result of their prize from the 2018 Wigmore Hall Competition, the Quartet received an invitation to the Jeunesses Musicales International Chamber Music Campus in Weikersheim, Germany. The Quartet maintains an active touring and performing schedule including notable debuts on the Schneider Concert Series, the Ravinia Festival, and the Heidelberg String Quartet Festival. They were also featured in Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall in July 2019 as Grand Prize winners of the 4th Manhattan International Music Competition Chamber Music Division. The quartet has been honored to collaborate with legendary artists, including cellist David Geringas at the Cleveland Cello Society’s 20th anniversary concert and clarinetist Franklin Cohen on the ChamberFest Cleveland Series. Over the 2018-2019 seasons at the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, they have collaborated with musicians such as Paul Watkins, Lawrence Power, Gilles Vonsattel, and John Novacek. In 2021, the quartet recorded Schubert’s Cello Quintet with Desmond Hoebig for the 2021 Banff International String Quartet Festival. The Callisto Quartet is committed to continually broadening their musical horizons by drawing inspiration from a plethora of mentors and musical approaches. They are also dedicated educators and believe in the importance of mentoring students and connecting with audiences in a meaningful way. The quartet most recently developed a unique chamber music curriculum entitled “Chamber Music Deconstructed: a Comprehensive Curriculum developed by the Callisto Quartet,” which they implemented during their 2021-22 teaching residency at the Fine Arts Center in Greenville, SC, and are currently bringing to other schools across the United States. ### Chagrin Arts is located at 88 North Main Street in Chagrin Falls Ohio. The work recounts the events of the capture of the Palace of Justice in Bogotá in November 1986 from the point of view of ordinary people. Julieta Marín, a young law student who works to pay for her studies as a cashier in the Palace of Justice cafeteria, never appeared among the survivors and the dead of the takeover. The disappearance unleashes chaos, fears and repression of the tenants of the house. Rehearsals begin on August 2. Performances from September 16 to October 9. Ohio Regional Music Arts and Cultural Outreach (ORMACO) continues its summer Jazz under the Stars concert series with Cleveland-based vocalist SaVon Bass and her jazz band IndiGo on July 9, 2022, at 7 pm in Medina's Uptown Park. The ensemble will present an exciting selection of popular vocal and instrumental swing, Latin and jazz standards. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and picnics to enjoy this free concert. It is our intention to return to a “normal” five-show slate by that time. For 2022-2023 we are still producing a limited season. Brochures will be out shortly. We welcome further applications. We are starting from scratch with this process and need full applications, with thanks to all. *The deadline for applying is August 1, 2022. * *Please submit to Play Reading Committee Chair Pat Price at* joeandpatprice(a)centurytel.net **if you have NOT directed with us before, please include a theatrical resume * **SUBMIT 4-5 PLAYS OR MUSICALS that you would be interested in directing at Workshop, along with synopsis of the play (*may be copied and pasted from licensing agent)*. * *** **Give a brief summary of why you believe the play would be effective in our unique theater-in-the-round space. * **Please be prepared to have at least one copy of each script available for the play reading committee should you be selected as one of the directors. * Workshop Players Theater is a non-profit, fully volunteer theater. It is the longest-running theater-in-the-round in Ohio (minus the pandemic break). We have a strong following in the surrounding community and hope that you would like to be part of our theatre family. Submitting directors may be interviewed by the Board of Trustees in August. *Due to the cost of production Workshop Players would do no more than one musical in a season, so if submitting musicals also include some straight plays to increase your chance of being chosen to direct.* We welcome Christmas plays too. Be aware that our backstage space is very limited, making massive scene changes difficult. Workshop enjoys producing plays for children and adults alike, musicals, comedies, and dramas —- and we will strive to put together a balanced season based on what is submitted to us.
