*Ensemble Theatre Presents Panorama of African American Theatre 5: "The Contect of Character"* To celebrate Black History Month, Ensemble Theatre will produce *Slow Dance on the Killing Ground* by Emmy Award winning writer William Hanley, and present the World Premiere of *Golde**n Leaf Rag Time Blues* by Ohio University Distinguished Professor and award winning playwright Charles Smith. These productions will serve as the 5th installment of our award winning *Panorama of African American Theatre Series*, titled *"The Content of Character"*. The two shows will run concurrently during the month of February. Talk-backs, writing workshops, and playwriting masterclasses will surround both productions, exploring themes prevalent in both scripts . Through these performances (and surrounding activities) we will create a community discussion about how these themes relate to today's issues regarding prejudice, self identification, discrimination, and police brutality. What are the lasting effects of prejudice on a community? The storekeeper a refugee from Nazi Germany, is close-mouthed, suspicious, anxious to avoid self-involvement. The third dancer is Rosie, an 18-year old from Riverdale who has wandered into the shop, after losing her way, with no illusions about her homeliness or about the encounter that has led to her troubles. The two men react to her with a sensitivity and concern that seem to diminish the furies within them. But not for long. Working with Wandering Aesthetics’ Education Director and Master Storyteller, Kyle Jozsa, and Artistic Director Benjamin Rexroad, students will explore the basics of discovering and crafting their very own story. Using folktales along with real life experiences, Jozsa and Rexroad will guide participants through the process of building a narrative. Moving from the bare bones to muscle & blood, participants will learn basic storytelling fundamentals and use those tools to shape their own telling. The workshop is designed for storytelling beginners, but can also offer new techniques to more experienced storytellers. Saturdays @ 12:30 PM – 3:00 PM (3/5 – 3/26) About the Instructors: Kyle Jozsa is the Co-Artistic Director and Director of Education with Wandering Aesthetics. He began his teaching career in 2010 with Weathervane Playhouse. Jozsa has worked full-time as a preschool teacher, developed curriculum for traditional and non-traditional classes alike and led many workshops for children of all age groups. He currently works as a Teaching Artist for the Artful Living Program out of Stark County as well as part-time at Gymboree in Strongsville and is working to bring a play-based enrichment program to the Akron area. Benjamin Rexroad is a theatre artist with a passion for poetry, travel and community. Through teaching, volunteering, hosting events and creating performances designed to actively engage the community, he is driven to be a source of positive energy in the world. Benjamin has trained with John O’Neal of Junebug Productions (Color Line Project), SITI Company (2010 Skidmore Summer Intensive) and was one of 25 international directors selected to participate in the 2014 Directors Lab North in Toronto. Since establishing Heads Up Productions six years ago (which evolved into Wandering Aesthetics), he has produced or directed 65 performances/events. In 2011, he was presented with the Akron Arts Alive Award in the Rising Young Star/Leadership category. The same year, he helped launch Akron’s only African-American theatre company and received a grant to tour a role-playing workshop about racism, poverty, class and social status. In 2013, Benjamin and his partner completed a thru-hike of the 2,185.9-mile Appalachian Trail. After a stint working for a title and escrow agency in Parma, Benjamin now works for both the Akronist and ArtsNow (SummitLive365.com) helping to build the arts and culture community throughout Akron and Summit County. Benjamin is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Young Professionals of Akron, Torchbearers Class of 2016 and the Downtown Akron Partnership Emerging Leaders Board.

The Hudson Players open 1776 this weekend!

For tickets, please visit www.HudsonPlayers.com or call 330-655-8522 As you watch the upcoming Hudson Players’ performance of the Tony-award winning, Broadway musical, 1776, you’ll wonder how the Declaration of Independence ever got done! Filled with sarcasm, name-calling, and physical altercations between politicians like John Adams, Ben Franklin and many others, the only likely difference between the congress of 1776 and the current one is the frequent outburst of songs. The cast, which just recently began its practices at Barlow Community Theatre in Hudson, consists of nearly all men (25) and two women, with nearly all being from the Hudson, Stow, Cuyahoga Falls, Twinsburg, Akron, and Barberton areas. For some, it’s their first show with the Hudson Players, and for others, like the co-music director Ron Jones, it’s the 4th show, and the 3rd time he’s assisted Roger Clary with the music (others include the award-winning Secret Garden and Spamalot). For Ron, 1776 has been on his “bucket list since it came out in the early 70’s…When Roger called, I jumped at the chance to be part of the production. Historically, this gives you a real inside to the creation of the Declaration of Independence…It wasn’t all just fun and games.” He comments further that the “music develops the historical significance of the people and social norms of the time.” Conni Caldren-Fleming, as choreographer (and first time with Hudson Players), has always wanted to do 1776, as it is one of her “favorite pieces of the theatre and I really want the audience to not only be entertained, but to understand that these characters were real people, risking literally everything including their lives, doing an impossible thing at an impossible time in history—and they succeeded!” Director Claudia Lillibridge, who previously directed The Secret Garden with Hudson Players, says that the greatest challenge of 1776 is “making sure there is space for everyone” as the cast is so large for many of the scenes. She goes on that “it is truly an honor to be involved in a show where the characters were real humans, with real lives, real problems and real joy.” The fun begins with a tied vote for independence and the rest is, well, history! John Adams, who takes most of the heat (literally and figuratively!) in the show, is played by Mark Durbin of Twinsburg. He is the victim being attacked in the first song, “For God’s Sake John, Sit Down!” which sets the humorous and energetic tone for the production. Joining Mark Durbin (Adams) are Gary Maher as John Hancock, Jessica DeFrange as Abigail Adams, long-time Hudson resident Jim Wolf as Richard Henry Lee, Michael J. Rogan as John Dickerson, Bob Kenderes as Andrew McNair, Adam Klusty of Barberton as Leather Apron, William Johns as the Courior, Thaddeus Bosman as Dr. Lyman Hall, Thomas Emerick as Stephen Hopkinson, and Mark Moore as Colonel Thomas McKean. John D. Haller plays Ceasar Rodney, Dan Williams is George Reed, Doug Lillibridge returns to Hudson Players as Lewis Morris, John Marfy portrays Robert Livingston, and John Alan Webb is cast as Joseph Hewes. Other cast members include Nathan Hill as Josiah Bartlett, Nathan Borukhovsky as Roger Sherman, Michael Guffey playing the red-haired and lonely Thomas Jefferson, Jessica West as Martha Jefferson, Sean Donavan as Samuel Chase, Issac Whitemarsh as the painter, Kirk Worcester (most recently of “Play On” with Hudson Players), Fig Jankowski as the cantankerous Ben Franklin (and formerly of the Addams Family production), Roger Parker as the Reverend John Witherspoon, and Thomas Horsfall as James Wilson. 1776 will be held at Barlow Community Theatre (41 S. CANTON - OH, The Players Guild Theatre announces upcoming auditions for the Downstage production, THE HOBBIT. Based on the richly-detailed fantasy by J.R.R. Tolkien, THE HOBBIT tells the tale of a young and reluctant hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, who leaves his home and sets off with a band of adventurers to slay a dragon and recover an enormous treasure. Along the way he encounters trolls, elves, goblins and a host of other fantasy characters. Told with wit and humor, THE HOBBIT is sure to please and engage audiences. Under the direction of Micah Harvey, the Players Guild is seeking to cast between 6-8 actors in a technically dense production with in a touching personal story of a hobbit going against a seemingly impossible task. Given the small number of actors who will be playing multiple roles, everyone will have a lot of stage time. *All roles are available and non-traditional casting will be considered for all roles*. Those available roles include: Bilbo- Male/ Female 15+: A hobbit who is stuck in his ways with his life. Character has a dry humor about him with a hidden sense of courage. Thorin- Male 19+: A dwarf who is the most stubborn of the characters. Very blind in his vision of what he wants yet has a hidden sensitivity. Gandalf- Male 40+: A wise wizard who offers insight and is the one really keeping this journey on course. Elrond- Male/Female 20+: A elf-friend who must present nobility, grace, and wisdom. Gollum- Male/Female 20+: A character that was once a hobbit, who has now been eaten away both mentally and physically by their addiction to a ring of power. Lord of the Eagles- Male 20+: A regal strong man who has a powerful connection with birds and winged creatures. Beorn- Male 20+: A shape shifter who moves between man and bear. Character must have power and strength. Bard- Male 20: A man who has seen hard times, and is captain of the guard. Character must have a sense of ruggedness. Master of Esgaroth- Male 20+: A weasel of a man who has somehow come into power though it is not deserved. Smaug- Male/Female Any Age: The dragon who guards the treasure. Auditions will be held at the Players Guild Theatre located in the Cultural Center for the Arts, 1001 Market Ave N., Canton, on Monday, February 15 and Tuesday, February 16, from 6:30 – 9:00 PM. Interested parties who are 15 years of age or older, should sign up for a time slot by filling out the available online form at www.playersguildtheatre.com. Walk-ins are permitted and will be accommodated for the first available time slot. Since over half the cast will be playing multiple characters we ask everyone to please prepare a 60-90 second monologue in two different styles. The first style should be a natural speaking tone while the second should be a character with a large personality of your choosing. Additionally, actors are asked to bring a current photo or headshot (and resume if available, but not required) with them to their audition. Principal callbacks are scheduled to be held on Thursday, February 18, beginning at 6:30 PM. The cast meet & greet and read thru will be held on Sunday, February 21 at 7:00 PM, and rehearsals will run Sunday - Thursday evenings from 7-10pm. This W.G. Fry Theatre production is scheduled to open on Friday, April 8, 2016 and will run through Sunday, April 24, 2016 with Friday performances at 7:00 PM and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2:00 PM.
