“Mary Poppins” Choreographer Opening Canton Players Guild Theatre The Canton Players Guild Theatre and DirectorMichael Lawrence Akers are seeking a dynamic Choreographer for our upcomingproduction of “Mary Poppins”. This is apaid position for a dance choreographer, who is versed in the followingdisciplines: tap (a must), jazz, modern, and musical theatre. The selectedchoreographer will be given 3-6 songs to choreograph/teach for theproduction. Contract dates will runfrom March 20th – May 12th,2016 (2-3 rehearsals per week.). Rehearsals are scheduled to run Sunday-Thursday evenings from 7-10pm. Auditions arescheduled for March 20th – 23rd. (March 22nd will be mandatory fordance callbacks). Based on Edna Ferber's best selling novel of the same name, the musical follows the lives of the performers, stagehands, and dock workers on the Cotton Blossom, a Mississippi River show boat, over forty years, from 1887 to 1927. With showgirls, gamblers, flappers, nuns and more, Show Boat is an old-fashioned, sweeping epic musical which explores themes of prejudice tragedy and enduring love across racial lines. Show Boat features such classic songs as "Ol' Man River" &"Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man". *** Note from the Director: As you may know, this is the first show on the American Musical stage to show black and white people living together and not treat them in a "color blind" way. This is 1887 on the banks of the Mississippi, a story moving in time to Chicago 1927, an amazing era of black music and dance being infused and celebrated into the white American experience. I'm not going to lie, this show is huge and demanding and requires actors/singers/dancers of the highest caliber to do it justice. Workshop Players present The Laramie Project by Moises Kaufman, directed by Rebecca Frick. Laramie, Wyoming, population 26,687. Laramie, often referred to as the “gem city of the plains”, was the site of the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard, a 21 year-old gay University of Wyoming student. On October 6, 1998, he was found tied to a buck fence, beaten and unconscious. *The Laramie Project* is a play by Moises Kaufman and the members of the Tectonic Theatre Project. “On November 14, 1998, members of Tectonic Theatre Project traveled to Laramie, Wyoming, and conducted interviews with the people of the town.” The play is “edited from those interviews, as well as from journal entries by members of the company.” (The Laramie Project, "Introduction") The Play is about the town of Laramie, its citizens, and their reaction to Matthew Shepard’s murder. As one of the investigating officers, Sergeant Hing stated: “How could this happen? I—I think a lot of people just don’t understand, and even I don’t really understand, how someone can do something like that. We have one of the most vocal populations of gay people in the state . . . and it’s pretty much: Live and let live.” The 9 actors in the cast portray 60+ characters. The cast includes: David Boyce, Ryanne Fury, Kyle Huff, David Hundertmark, Shelbey Linder, Caroline Meister, Pat Price, Kristina Rivera and Terry Smith. *Advisory*: This play contains language and situations that may be offensive to some audience members. *The Laramie Project* runs January 28th - February 14th. LCCC Civic Jazz Band to Perform a Swingin' Concert on Saturday, February 13 The Lorain County Community College Civic Jazz Band will perform its first concert of 2016 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, February 13 in the Spitzer Conference Center Grand Room on the LCCC campus. The jazz band will present "It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got that Swing." Water Street, Suite HKent, Ohio$10 suggested donation (or pay what you can)preceded by 7:30 p.m. meet-and-greet featuring light Indian food and drinks (sparkling water and fruit juices) An evening of music from one of the world's great classical traditions: the Carnatic music of South India, performed on the veena by Dr. Shiva Sastry, a member of the Engineering faculty at the University of Akron. Dr. Sastry will present pieces in a wide variety of styles, providing engaging explanations of the music and instruments along the way. Mridangam (barrel drum) accompaniment willl be provided by Suraj Srinivasan of Strongsville, Ohio. An instrument of ancient origin, the veena is a plucked lute about four feet in length with seven steel strings, 24 frets, and a soundbox that is carved out of the trunk of a jackfruit tree. Rarely heard in North America, it is not as well known as the sitar, its North Indian counterpart. In the culture of India, however, the veena holds the special significance of representing all music, being the instrument used by Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of music and the arts. Dr. Shivakumar Sastry is an accomplished veena player trained in the Mysore School. Originally from Bangalore, in the Karnataka state of South India, he has lived in the U.S. for over two decades. He studied under Vidwan H. S. Krishnamoorthy and Vidwan T. K. Govinda Rao, and has given successful and well-received recitals in several U.S. states as well as in India. Dr. Sastry is member of the faculty in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Akron. Suraj Srinivasan began learning mridangam from his mother, Sujatha Srinivasan, at the age of six, and has been receiving advanced training from his guru, Vinod Seetharaman of Michigan, since 2010. He has accompanied several young artists at iCarnatic’s music festivals in Detroit and Chicago, and participated in their Tala Vadya Kutcheris in 2014 and 2015. He has also performed at several concerts and cultural events in Cleveland and Columbus. The winner of several prizes at the Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival, Suraj is currently a sophomore at Strongsville High School. "As someone who just turned 22, a lot of people tend to ask me why I continue to return to Hathaway Brown Theatre Institute. Well, for one thing, the training they continue to give me each year still pushes me. There is never a day at HBTI where I don’t learn anything, whether it’s Bebe reminding me about alignment at the barre, or Fred pushing me to find the truth in a character and make it more like Jessica and not a caricature. At 22 years of age, I am still able to soak up so much information. While HBTI continually moves me forward in acting and dance, I have learned life lessons there that are completely invaluable. · HBTI has taught me how to focus and conduct myself professionally. · HBTI helped me transform from a crybaby into a strong young woman. · HBTI helped me to recognize that I had things in my life that were holding me back, and HBTI encouraged me to let go. · HBTI taught me that good theatre is not based on where it is, what awards the show wins, or how many professionals are in the show with you. Good theatre is good theatre. I keep telling myself that I keep coming back to HBTI because they keep doing shows that I love and want to be a part of, but that’s really only a piece of it. Something I learned at HBTI is that when you play a character, no matter how rough that characters situation is, you must “play the hope”, or “have hope through adversity”. Thanks to HBTI, I don’t just apply this to my characters anymore. I apply it to Jessica as well. As a BFA musical theatre student, I have days where I sometimes start to forget why I chose to do this for the rest of my life. Spending one day at HBTI reminds me why. HBTI gives me hope."
