Touring ‘Waitress’ a blue-plate special with a side of extraordinary Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics There’s an old adage from the days of Rodgers and Hart that a sign of a great musical is audience members humming a show tune on their way out of the theater. While leaving the Connor Palace Theatre after witnessing “Waitress,” several show tunes – with their close-knit harmonies, coffee house/country bar sensibilities, and poignant lyrics – fight for supremacy. It can even be argued that “Waitress” is all about the music, for playwright Jessie Nelson’s faithful adaptation of Adrienne Shelly's low-budget 2007 movie of the same name is a rather formulaic confection about the hopes and dreams of small-town waitress Jenna, who helps run Joe’s Pie Diner somewhere in the South. But the gorgeous songs by Grammy-winning composer and lyricist Sara Bareilles provide personal insight into the hopes and dreams of the show’s central characters and, by doing so, offer pitch-perfect voice and a gorgeous melody to our own expectations and aspirations. >From the show-opening “What’s Inside” to the finale “Everything Changes,” the songs air lift the storytelling that surrounds them. So does director Diane Paulus' remarkable staging, which adds a palpable heightened sense of reality to everything her designers have to offer. “Letting Go of God” by Julia Sweeney to be performed by Harriet DeVeto at Western Reserve Playhouse November 4th at 8PM. Local theatre luminary, Harriet DeVeto, performs a staged reading of Julia Sweeney’s “Letting Go of God.” DeVeto is thrilled to be back on the WRP stage after appearing in “Scotland Road”, directed by Co-Artistic Director Brian Westerley, earlier this fall. DeVeto has appeared on local & regional stages, including a stint with the Great Lakes Theatre Festival. Her most recent performances include: “4000 Miles” & “The Waverly Gallery” at Weathervane; “Sans Merci” at None Too Fragile; “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” at Stow Players; “Night of January 16th" at WRP; & her OCTA award-winning role as Silda in “Other Desert Cities” at Wolf Creek Players. Letting Go of God is a humorous monologue by Julia Sweeney chronicling her search for God. She begins in the Catholic Church, the religion her family raised her in, & takes a Bible study class. THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE brings together Dawn, a young woman with a stutter, and Don, the creator and teacher of Unamunda, a wild comic language. Their lesson sends them off into a dazzling display of hysterical verbal pyrotechnics—and, of course, true love. PHILIP GLASS BUYS A LOAF OF BREAD is a parodic musical vignette in trademark Glassian style, with the celebrated composer having a moment of existential crisis in a bakery. THE PHILADELPHIA presents a young man in a restaurant who has fallen into "a Philadelphia," a Twilight Zone-like state in which he cannot get anything he asks for. VARIATIONS ON THE DEATH OF TROTSKY shows us the Russian revolutionary on the day of his demise, desperately trying to cope with the mountain-climber's axe he's discovered in his head. The Nordonia High School Drama Club will present William Shakespeare’s *A Midsummer Night’s Dream* as this year’s fall play production. The Drama Club is excited to take on their first Shakespeare production with *Midsummer*, easily one of the bard’s most famous comedies. Directed by Nordonia’s Director of Drama, Chris Simmons, with the assistance of Dane Leasure, *Midsummer* will be presented in the round, with the audience seated on the stage with the actors. *Performances for Midsummer are: Friday and Saturday, October 27th and 28th, at 7:00 PM and Sunday, October 29th, at 3:00 PM, in the high school auditorium. * Due to the audience configuration, seating will be limited for each performance. Saint Martin de Porres High School is performing *The Curious Savage *by John Patrick this coming weekend (Thursday, Oct 26 at 6pm and Friday, Oct 27 at 7pm), and we are looking for a large rug for our set. We are in need of one large (at least 8x10) floral rug. We can pick it up from you and take it off your hands, or just rent it for the week. Preferred colors: baby blues, greens, pinks. Audition for Student Film and Video Projects – FALL 2017! YOU'RE AUDITIONING FOR: Cuyahoga Community College's beginner level film and video students - who are creating several short projects (music videos, commercials, drama monologues, and super short narrative films), and need local talent. See some SAMPLES further down on this page. This is an "Intro to Filmmaking" class, taught by Prof. Bruno Tatalovic. Several students who completed this course in previous years – are now established local film artists, videographers, PAs on big union films, etc. WHEN: Friday, October 27, stop by anytime between 9:15am and 1:15pm WHERE: Tri-C Campus in Parma, Ohio (11000 W Pleasant Valley Rd, park in "visitor"; walk to middle-building/galleria; look for room G107, next to campus police); If lost on campus - text us at 440-783-2405 <(440)%20783-2405>. WHO SHOULD COME: This type of collaboration is perfect for beginner (or intermediate) level actors who need more footage for their first demo-reel. Each of these projects feature 1-2 actors only, and gives you a lot of screen time and dialogue or monologue lines. These are unpaid (volunteer / collaborate) productions. Get your first credit, your acting demo, and establish new relationships with like-minded content creators. Also, if you have NO screen acting experience, but you truly BELIEVE that you have what it takes - COME and try out! These projects are 1 day (half a day) productions, sometimes in November (based on actors' availability). It's a “walk-in” audition (cold read or short personal monologue - if desired).
