Review of "THe Bridges of Madison County" at Lakeland Civic Theatre

Rickety ‘The Bridges of Madison County’ bolstered by Lakeland Civic Theatre’s talent, vision Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics Artistic Director Martin Friedman has an affinity for underdog musicals. He’s staged “Anyone Can Whistle,” which was a commercial flop, a critical disaster and, for composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim, a devastating professional failure when produced on Broadway in 1964. He’s offered David Mamet’s snarky, profanely cynical “November,” which lasted only 6 months on Broadway in 2008 and is rarely produced elsewhere. And currently on stage at Lakeland Civic Theatre is the novel-to-screen-to-stage musical “The Bridges of Madison County,” which opened in 2014 and closed not long after at Broadway’s Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. “The Bridges of Madison County’s” overt sentimentality and schmaltz reads well on the page where it earned “Best Seller” status as a 1992 romantic novel by Robert James Waller. And it was a box office success when imbued with Hollywood star-power (Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood) and sweeping cinematography in 1995. It had limited appeal as Marsha Norman’s live stage adaptation, where its Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations by Jason Robert Brown could not salvage its rather sparse narrative, its often contrived literary dialogue, and the aforementioned schmaltz. But in addition to his attraction to underdogs, Friedman also has an affinity for finding the heart in everything he stages, particularly the underdogs. CONVERGENCE-CONTINUUM AUDITIONS FOR “HARM’S WAY” BY MAC WELLMAN SATURDAY, FEB 18 AT 2:00 PM AT THE LIMINIS THEATER, 2438 SCRANTON RD, CLEVELAND 44113 Convergence-continuum will be holding auditions for avant-garde playwright/poet Mac Wellman’s HARM’S WAY this Saturday, Feb. 18 at its Liminis Theater at 2 pm. The play, set in a mythical America, follows the bizarre exploits of Santouche, a very angry person, as he attempts to make sense of his understanding of law & order in a land of other angry persons. The action doesn’t unfold in any specific time/place, but all the characters drink from the same poisonous well, which is definitely recognizably American. It might be any time in the last 70 years, or possibly even in the next. Directed by Clyde Simon, HARM’S WAY _ _will open Fri, March 24 and run Thurs-Sat through April 15, and will be part of the citywide Mac Wellman Homecoming Festival organized by Playwrights Local. Rehearsals will begin around Feb 22. Beck’s ‘Bring It On’ offers cheer-face and style over substance Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics It has been suggested by experts like Oskar Eustis, the Artistic Director at New York City’s Public Theater, that Lin-Manuel Miranda – who penned the Tony Award-winning musicals “In the Heights” and “Hamilton” – may be the next Shakespeare. Miranda has, at a very young age, demonstrated incredible productivity, extraordinary popularity and a proclivity for turning the language of the people – in his case, hip-hop and rap – into heightened verse. Teen-spirit and up-beat cheer-face aside, Miranda’s “Bring It On” is very much the equivalent of Shakespeare’s “Cymbeline.” Both are lesser works with fleeting moments of art amidst a preponderance of artifice. And both are geared more for the people in the cheap seats seeking entertainment than those in the royal boxes seeking enlightenment. But thanks to a talent pool drawn from Baldwin Wallace University's Music Theatre Program, this Beck Center for the Arts production rises well above the source material. Summit StageFest

On June 3, 2017 Akron’s Highland Square neighborhood will play host to the first annual Summit StageFest. There will be various stages set up where different theater companies from Summit County and surrounding areas will be performing live theatrical pieces. There will also be street performers, stage combat, other theater related activities and art and food vendors. One of the stages will be dedicated to any performers who would like to be involved regardless of their theater affiliation. If you and your friends would like to perform at the event, here is your chance. On March 26 and 28 from 6-10 PM, Weathervane Playhouse will host auditions for this event. We ask that you prepare a scene, anywhere from 10-30 minutes, and bring it to auditions. Please also bring a copy of the entire piece that you plan to perform. You do not have to be off book for the audition. StageFest is a family event so your scene will need to be PG at most.
