Kent Trumbull Theatre Announces Playwriting & Scholarship Competitions

Warren, OH (Oct. 18, 2021) - Kent State University at Trumbull's Theatre Program hopes young local talent will become the next generation of great playwrights, actors, and theatrical technicians. Young Playwrights Festival High school juniors or seniors in Trumbull County, or any neighboring county, are invited to compete in Kent Trumbull Theatre's inaugural Young Playwrights Festival next spring. Participating students will submit a 15-20 minute script that will be judged by theatre professionals and faculty. The top five or six students will produce their plays for local audiences at the Kent Trumbull Theatre, April 22-24 and April 29-May 1. The deadline for consideration is Feb. 1, 2022. Theatre Scholarships Students who want to continue studying theatre and earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Studies at Kent State Trumbull can compete for theatre scholarships. High school juniors and seniors from Trumbull County, or any neighboring county may submit their application for consideration in any one of three pathways. For the acting pathway, students will submit an audition video of two contrasting monologues. For the playwriting pathway, students will submit a 15-20 minute script (scripts submitted for the Young Playwrights Festival can be counted for this requirement). For the technical theatre pathway, students will present a technical portfolio detailing their work in the theatre. Up to six $2,000 renewable scholarships will be offered. "We began offering the four-year degree in Theatre Studies a few years ago, and it continues to grow," Eric S. Kildow, professor and Theatre Director, said. "These scholarships and the Young Playwrights Festival are great ways to encourage students to follow their dreams." AUDITION NOTICE Seeking male actor, mid-40s, any race/ethnicity, for final open role in premiere production of new play PLAYWRIGHTS LOCAL www.playwrightslocal.org Millwood Outpost Written by Tom Hayes Directed by Rachel Zake Production Info: Rehearsals: February 12 - March 17, 2022 Performances: March 18 - April 3, 2022 Location: Creative Space at Waterloo Arts, 397 East 156th Street, Cleveland, OH 44110 Playwrights Local is casting for the premiere production of Millwood Outpost, a new play by Cleveland-based author Tom Hayes. In this drama, six highway workers are forced by stormy weather to share one room in an abandoned Department of Transportation outpost. Over the course of several hours, the men must confront their own fears, prejudices, and beliefs, and those of each other, while elemental forces outside threaten them all. This production will be directed by Rachel Zake, with rehearsals beginning on February 12, 2022 and performances ending on April 3, 2022. In Sync, Fall 2021 The Department of Dance at Case Western Reserve University celebrates movement and innovation by leading off the 2021-22 season with In Sync, a collection of new and revisited dance works. In Sync will be performed October 29 and 30, November 4, 5, and 6 at 8 p.m. and October 31 at 2:30pm at Mather Dance Center, 11040 Bellflower Road, on the Case Western Reserve campus in University Circle. In Sync features the newest production of Les Noces by Pascal Rioult, the return of Pam Tanowitz’s Like Fragments from an Old Song, as well as the premiere of Ubi Sunt by department chair Karen Potter. A 2019 audience favorite Brothers by Gary Galbraith will also return, along with the premiere of the companion piece Sisters. Les Noces, by two time recipient of the Choo-San Goh Award for Choreography Pascal Rioult, is a sexually charged deconstruction of the marriage ritual, infusing the strong structural composition with provocative movement and unabashed energy. Pam Tanowitz’s Like Fragments From an Old Song is set to and inspired by Broad and Free, a composition for violin and piano by contemporary composer Caroline Shaw. The work was created during Tanowitz’s eight day CWRU residency in 2019 and explores fragmented movements woven together by the dancers’ connectivity and intuition, with an homage to the history of Mather Dance Center. Created by chair of the department Karen Potter, Ubi Sunt is a somber dance for 10 women that was loosely inspired by the sadness endured when losing a loved one. Brothers, premiered in 2019 by Galbraith, showcases 7 of the men of the dance department. Set to the music of Barbatuques, Brothers brings forward a camaraderie among the men in a highly rhythmic and dynamic field of motion. Drawing from the strengths of the men, this dance has a tribal quality yet remains a contemporary, communal ensemble. Also on the program is the premiere of Sisters, the companion piece to Brothers, thus completing the Sibling series. Like Brothers, Sisters features a cast of 7 women and shares the same kind of tribal and primitive feeling yet remains contemporary. Utilizing the driving score by Mikkael Karlsson, Sisters is a celebration of the communal power and strength of women. Tickets are $10 for students, $12 for seniors age 60+ and CWRU personnel, and $15 for general admission. Student discounts are not available for the November 6 performance. Reservations open on October 4th, and may be made by calling (216) 368-5246 or online at dance.case.edu/reservations.**Increasing COVID-19 cases within Northeast Ohio have prompted Case Western Reserve to resume its requirement that masks be worn indoors. The University of Akron starts its 2021-2022 season with *Concord Floral *by Jordan Tannahill, directed by Lana Sugarman. An abandoned greenhouse, 10 teenagers, and a secret they're trying to forget... Performance dates are October 21, 22, 23 at 7:30 P.M. and October 23 and 24 at 2:00 P.M. We seek a part-time Associate Producer to produce the BorderLight Fringe Festival and serve as the main organizer and logistician to ensure the Fringe Festival and its associated events run smoothly, from pre-planning, venue selection and load-in through to load-out. The right person will have a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and representation. They will also be a self-directed problem solver, highly organized, and with excellent communication skills and relevant experience in the performing arts, theatre or festival production. Terms: Part-time position from November 10, 2021, with longer hours and pro-rated pay during festival season.
