Evren Odcikin was awarded the 2015 National Director's Fellowship by the O'Neill, National New Play Network, the Kennedy Center, and Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation. Based in San Francisco he is a director and producer with credits at Golden Thread Productions (where he serves as the Director of New Plays) including Yussef El Guindi's Language Rooms, in San Francisco and Los Angeles (critic's pick for LA Times), Mona Mansour's Urge For Going, Kevin Artigue's The Most Dangerous Highway in the World (Theatre Bay Area Award Recommended Production), Denmo Ibrahim's Ecstasy | a waterfable, as well as numerous short plays in ReOrient Festivals. When disco diva wannabe Deloris Van Cartier sees her gangster boyfriend Curtis Jackson commit a murder at the grungy club where she’s performing, she reports the crime to the police and is placed in the witness protection program. Disguised as a nun named Sister Mary Clarence, she is placed in the convent of the Holy Order of the Little Sisters of Our Mother of Perpetual Faith, where she finds herself up against the rigid Mother Superior. Deloris uses her singing talent to inspire the other nuns to create a more contemporary choir, and they become the hit of the community. Word of their success reaches Curtis and his mob, who arrive on the scene to settle their score with Deloris and find them- selves battling not only her, but a gang of feisty nuns and the Mother Superior as well. *The Art of Play--Creating Theatre for Children A Professional Arts Workshop Series with Alison Garrigan CPAC 2016 Creative Workforce Fellowship Grant recipient and Executive Artistic Director for Talespinner Children's Theatre* A series of free workshops for adults, 18 and over, on how to create challenging, engaging, intelligent, and playful theatre for kids and families. During the first part of her Fellowship year, Ali has traveled around the country, meeting with other like-minded makers of arts for kids--now she is combining what she has learned with her own method of theatre creation, and wants to share it with fellow theatre artists, teachers, parents, and the joyfully curious and playful--to give back to our amazing community. Review of "The Little Mermaid" at Mercury Theatre

Mercury Theatre’s ‘The Little Mermaid’ flounders Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics As tempting as it is for local theaters to stage adaptations of animated Disney films, it is a near-impossible uphill climb to capture the cinematic majesty of the movies and the big-budgeted spectacle of the Broadway productions. Some theaters wisely opt to re-envision the work in the hope that simplification and creativity can capture the heart of the original. Re-envisioning happens to be Mercury Theatre’s strong suit, best seen in this season’s marvelous “Finnian’s Rainbow” and a recent, ingenious production of “Peter Pan: The Musical Adventure.” But for its current production of “The Little Mermaid” – based on the 1989 Disney film that is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic story about a young mermaid who dreams of the world above the sea and gives up her voice to find love – director Pierre-Jacques Brault has opted for opulence.
