REVIEW: Mary Poppins at Players Guild Theatre

Magical Medicine By Tom Wachunas For those of usfamiliar with Disney’s 1964 family film classic, Mary Poppins, featuringthe memorable chemistry between Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, it might be understandable to wonderhow a stage version (this one opened on Broadway in 2006) featuring localtalent could possibly measure up. But perish the thought. This is, after all,the Players Guild Theatre, and just about every aspect of this mainstage offeringis, as the title of one song suggests, practically perfect. Directed by MichaelLawrence Akers (who also choreographed the show along with Bart Herman), thewell-practiced cast is, in a word, extraordinary. The big ensemble songs areexecuted with a practically tribal intensity, replete with luscious harmoniesand commanding choreographic bravura (even the final curtain call is anelectrifying act in itself), all skillfully synced with the vibrant live orchestraled by Steve Parsons. And the set pieces designed by Joshua Erichsen,especially the chimneyed London rooftops spread across the stage in Act Two,are impressive. In the title roleof the nanny hired to serve the troubled Banks family in 1910 London, MegMartinez is an utterly magnetic presence, even if she does seem a bit nervoushanging on to her flying umbrella. She’s an eminently gifted singer as well asvery attentive to her character’s more subtle psychological underpinnings. Yes, she’s genuinely bubbly and loving. Yetdespite her infectious charisma, she’s also a wise loner in a complicated sortof way, and fully capable of answering any sassy challenge to her position withsardonic wit. Those challengescome primarily in the form of George Banks, the family patriarch with misplacedpriorities, and early on, the rambunctious children, Jane and Michael. As theirascible Mr. Banks, Micah Harvey is compelling in his own right, obsessed withhis job as a banker and exuding a chilling detachment from his children as wellas his wife, Winifred, played by Amanda Medley. Like the children, she’sstarved for really authentic love. Medley’s piercing, bittersweet voice is apoignant embodiment of fragility, longing, and frustration initially, but asthe story progresses, we watch her gather confidence when her hopelessness is palpablytransformed into family healing. Through it all, young Brooklyn Fockler asJane, and Adam Petrosino as Michael, perform with endearing - at times even startling – panache. To quoteanother iconic song, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocius,they “…always sound precocious.” Also quiteastonishing is the vivacious energy that the versatile Justin Edenhofer stirsup in his role of the street-hardened yet tender Bert (Dick Van Dyke’s role inthe film). He’s something of the amiable ringmaster of ceremonies here. And nowhereare his lithe and limber capabilities more apparent than in the thrilling ensemblenumber, Step in Time, wherein he’sliterally soaring above the crowd, gingerly stepping across the twirling topsof wire brooms held aloft by his fellow Chimney Sweeps. An equally enchantedscene ensues a little earlier in Act Two as Michael (Adam Petrosino) gleefullyguides a spot-lighted kite that dances in the air above the stage during Let’s Go Fly a Kite. Among other delectable highlights arethe hilarious performances by Julie Connair and Matthew Heppe as theeasily-panicked household servants; Joey Cogan as both an animated marblestatue in the park and Jane’s haunted toy doll, Valentine; and Annie Giancolaas the stern and spooky Miss Andrew, a “holy terror” of a nanny who can singwith operatic intensity. It’s far more thanjust a spoonful of sugar that makes Mary Poppins’ magical medicine go down withsuch efficacious and certainly entertaining, results. Sweet, even syrupy, to besure. Frank, a famous photographer, settles in along with his portfolio of female nudes. Phyllis is disgusted by his work and finds it exploitative, but Joyce, intrigued, contemplates posing for him, threatening their relationship. Meanwhile, Joyce’s grown son Jared continues to deny his symptoms related to Asperger’s Syndrome. Tensions in the family rise, as Jared turns to Frank for sexual advice in this domestic comedy. FREE Children's Broadcast Interviewing Workshop with Devon Turchan at TCT

Sign your kids up for this FREE workshop at Talespinner Children's Theatre! Through this multi-faceted workshop, children ages 8 - 14 will learn the basic skills needed to be an on-camera interviewer! Then, they'll put their skills to the test. TCT Marketing Director Devon Turchan will call on his love of theatre and his education in broadcast journalism (find out more below) to teach children how to develop questions and engage an interview subject. Students will practice camera presence and speech clarity through a variety of TCT's acting warm-ups and exercises. After a day of preparation, this new troupe of interviewers will sit down with members of TCT's current production of "The Crocodile, The Cobra, & The Girl Down The Well," to put their new skills into action. These videos will then be used to help spread the word about that production! A pizza dinner will be provided. Students who attend the workshop will receive a free ticket to opening night of the show that evening. Bold, original, disturbing, and alarmingly funny, Assassins is perhaps the most unexpected musical ever written. CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS The Balladeer - Tenor C3-G4; ability to play guitar is a plus. The Balladeer is the conscience of America and the champion of the American Dream. He acts as a foil against the assassins and their warped perspectives and actions. The Proprietor - Tenor Gb2-F4; The Proprietor is the Grim Reaper, handing out weapons and overseeing the demise of presidents and assassins alike. His power is in his omnipresence and indifference; his characterization requires both dramatic irony and restrained wit. John Wilkes Booth - Baritone F2-G4; tall and distinguished; character will need a genteel Southern accent. A political zealot, "Wilkes" is the pioneer of American assassination and acts as leader and twisted mentor to the other assassins. "The Ballad of Booth" and his seduction of Lee Harvey Oswald are two of his pivotal scenes. Leon Czolgosz (pronounced "CHOL-gash") - Bass Baritone G#2-G4; slight of build. Czolgosz was an anarchist who, in killing William McKinley, decided to take matters of government into his own hands for the sake of the common man. Important scenes include "The Gun Song" and the meeting with Emma Goldman. Guiseppe Zangara - Tenor B2-A4; a short actor is preferred but not required; MUST use a heavy Italian accent for this character. Zangara blamed capitalists and "kings" for his medical conditions and attempted an assassination of Franklin D. Roosevelt-instead killing Mayor Cermak of Chicago. Zangara has a solo on the electric chair in "How I Saved Roosevelt." Sara Jane Moore - Soprano F3-Eb5. Actress is middle-aged and frumpy. Moore, a former FBI informant five times married, nearly assassinated Gerald Ford in 1975 - the second such attempt on his life in three weeks. Moore provides much of the comic relief in the show and requires an actress with good comic timing. Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme - Mezzo A3-G5; slender and pretty. Fromme, a flower child and member of Charlie Manson's cult "family," attempted an assassination of Gerald Ford in 1975. She is the lunatic foil to Sara Jane Moore's airheadedness in several scenes and sings a duet with John Hinckley. John Hinckley - Baritone A2-G4; blond and husky; ability to play guitar is a plus. Hinckley used a sociopathic obsession with Jodie Foster as his excuse to attempt an assassination of Ronald Reagan in 1981. Hinckley's clinical insanity and love-sickness add dramatic weight to this character. His pivotal scene is a duet with Squeaky Fromme. Charles J. Guiteau - Tenor A2-Ab4; average in stature; a beard would be helpful but not required. Guiteau was a multi-careered charlatan with delusions of grandeur who assassinated James Garfield in 1882. This intense libertine requires a multi-personality characterization and a flair for the dramatic. His key scene involves a cakewalk to the gallows. Samuel Byck - Heavy set; blue-collar Philly accent required. Byck was disgruntled at government and all it stood for when he attempted to hijack a plane with the intent of crashing it into the Nixon White House. A small vocal role, it requires an actor capable of presenting two dramatic, page-anda-half monologues. For Byck, please choose from the excerpt that fits your vocal range (tenor, baritone, or bass-baritone). Lee Harvey Oswald -Actor is slight to average build; rural Louisiana twang required. Oswald sings in the closing number and requires the dramatic capacity to spar with John Wilkes Booth in the pivotal Book Depository scene. Emma Goldman-Turn-of-the-century anarchist agitator and feminist. Townspeople - Required to play a variety of parts. The "townspeople" require strong individual voices as they sing "How I Saved Roosevelt" and the gut-wrenching "Something Just Broke." Other - A Bartender, President James Garfield, President Gerald Ford, Various reporters, photographers, tourists, bystanders, etc.
