Workshop Players Seeking Directors For 2017-2018 Season

Dear Director, We, at Workshop Players, are launching into the process of planning for our 71st season. As the longest running theater-in-the-round in the state of Ohio, we are pleased to invite you to apply to direct during the 2018-2019 season. For several years we put together our season based solely upon submission by directors choosing shows that each had a vision to direct. Though I stand by this process and philosophy, we deviated last year asking for submissions from the first 5 decades our our existence. For the 71st we want to amend the process again while still maintaining director ownership. Below is a list of shows with NAME RECOGNITION. Many are taken from compilations of “The Best Plays of the Past 100 years”. Many are dramas or musicals. There are few comedies from those lists, yet we want to maintain a balance of genres and styles, so we are still interested in including comedies. Please note that though we are presenting a list, we have not thought through the technical aspects of presenting any of these shows in our unique space. That is, as always, the job of the director. We invite you to peruse the list to see if any of the titles intrigue you as a director, get a copy and think through those production elements. We further invite you to make a combination of suggestions to us, choosing 1-2 from the list below, plus 1-2 suggestions of your own if you wish…especially those that fit into the follow categories. Beyond the list below, we are especially interested in FAMILY FRIENDLY SHOWS, AND SHOWS SPECIFICALLY AIMED AT CHILDREN (not necessarily including children in the cast —-could be adults performing a show that would bring children into the theater). If you have already directed at Workshop Players, you need not submit a resume or application, merely your list of play submissions that include and overview of the play and WHY and HOW you believe each would fit into our space. Directors will be interviewed the second week of April by the Board of Trustees when 5 directors will be chosen. The play reading committee will then read all of the plays submitted and meet with each director in August to finalize a balanced, interesting season. Review of "The King and I" at Playhouse Square

Success of touring ‘The King and I’ is no puzzlement Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics The double-edged sword associated with revivals of Golden Age musicals is that our overfamiliarity with the work – its score, its staging, its characters and the actors who defined them – cries out for change while simultaneously condemning it. Novelty and nostalgia are always at odds in theatrical re-productions. This is particularly true for stage-to-screen musicals like “The King and I,” where our memories of the original work are cinematic. These perpetually preserved images are impossible to replicate in a live production and are reinforced with every viewing of the 1956 film, so each attempt at innovation is blatantly obvious and often underwhelming. And yet, director Bartlett Sher’s production of this Rodgers and Hammerstein classic, on tour and on stage at the Connor Palace Theatre, offers creative changes and new ways of tapping our emotions without ever detracting from why it was a classic in the first place. Michaels has just begun shooting "Out of Darkness: Cleveland," a sci-fi/ crime series that is a reboot of the first dramatic TV series set and shot in Cleveland. > > "Real crime hurts and leaves scars that can never truly heal," says Michaels. It would seem a natural fit, and he tried but it didn't work. Michaels believes they have a similar vision but different ways of achieving it. Michaels says the Commissioner mainly sees our city as a location backlot for Hollywood movies. "Ivan has brought a lot of awareness here but we need to show we are more than just a tax credit and a backlot." > > "Out of Darkness: Cleveland" is being funded by private investors and local businesses who have been written into the story. The first sponsor of the original series "Lucy's Sweet Surrender" is back along with Holmes Applesauce and Michaels is close to signing a few million dollar companies. Valentine Swing Dance on Friday, February 10th

The Lakewood Masonic Temple swing dance at 15300 Detroit Avenue is the longest running swing dance in the Cleveland area. Amazing live music and DJs have been keeping everyone's toes tapping the second Friday of every month since before 1998. Since this is our Valentine dance, expect lots of red and pink decor, a photo op area full of hearts, a fun mixer, and lots of other sugary swing schmaltz. We have one of the biggest swing dances in the area with over 150 people attending each month. Attendees have a variety of dance experience (including none) and come from all walks of life and ages. You will not need to bring a dance partner. We rotate partners during the dance lesson. How often do you get to meet 50-100 new people in under an hour? We provide the highest quality swing dance instruction from some of the nicest, most patient people you will ever meet. Our staff includes regional, national and international swing dance competitors (and winners) in multiple swing dance forms. Dances are $12 per person, $10 for students and seniors with a valid ID, $5 for first timers. From 8-9pm Get Hep Swing instructors lead a beginner-friendly, jitterbug lesson. Remember, you do not need a partner. 9-12 Live music! Each month we feature a different band. DJs play a variety of swing dance-able tunes during the band breaks. Friday, February 10th - The traditional swing band, Red Light Roxy hits the stage! We welcome anyone to join us who has an interest in dance, music, socializing and fun. We don't care what your physical ability or size is, where you are in life, where you are on the spectrum of sexual or gender orientation, what color or creed, or non-creed, you are. Are you a man who wants to learn how to follow or a woman who wants to learn how to lead? That's cool! This idea is not new to the swing dance scene. We are the easiest club to join. If you have an interest, you are in. :) We love spreading the gospel of swing dancing and we are excited to share the language and culture of this truly American, urban folk dance form with you. It is important for us to let you know that this dance style started in the African-American ballrooms of Harlem, New York in the late 1920s/early 1930s. This dance has a gritty earthiness that is incredibly empowering, beautiful, and joyful. We can't wait for you to experience this conversation of dance with us. Attire is anything from casual to dressy. The best shoes to wear are comfortable and will allow you to pivot and turn easily. We make learning to partner dance easy and enjoyable. Film Fest. strives to showcase the best local, national, and international films from up-and-coming filmmakers.
